The intercom was fine but the VOX feature needs a lot of improvement, we had to turn the detection knob all the way up for it to work a little.

Comments about RadioShack 4-Channel 900MHz Wireless Intercom with VOX Mode:

I purchased this item as I live in an attic apartment and the entrance is one floor below. In an effort to prevent deliveries from not being made because I don't hear a knock or someone stops by and they think I'm not home, I thought this was a viable solution. Problem is, since one is mounted on my "front" door, and the other travels around the apartment with me, I had no idea that even when on but not active, the batteries were still draining. So after about 72 hours, I had 8 dead "AA" batteries. Bad idea.

Comments about RadioShack 4-Channel 900MHz Wireless Intercom with VOX Mode:

We purchased four of these about 6 years ago. They were basically just to keep us from yelling from one end of the house to the other. When we had our son we decided to get a baby monitor as well. HUGE waste of money, when we realized just how clear these things are. We packed up the baby monitor & have used the intercoms since. Keeping it in a locked mode, we've been able to hear him through the years as a baby & crying, & then onto the "falling out of bed" stage, to just whenever he gets up in the mornings (hearing him breathe & his cries, when his bed is 10ft from the monitor, has saved us a lot of nervous first time parenting issues). We've been able to take it way out into the back yard (we're on 1/2 an acre) & paint his play ground during nap times, while keeping a clear ear on him. We have one up in the bonus room on the other side of the house as well & can hear just as clearly. They're starting to make random cracking & almost propeler like noises, but it's not constant. And this is all after 6 yrs of constant use (every single day), while being carried around, dropped, dragged, etc. That is why I am even back here, ready to purchase more!! Definitely worth it!!!

Comments about RadioShack 4-Channel 900MHz Wireless Intercom with VOX Mode:

I spent several hours reviewing comments concerning wireless intercom systems and finally settled on this model. I bought two sets for a total of four intercoms to use in our southern Mississippi home. Installation was as simple as inserting the power cord into the back of the intercom and turning the antenna into the vertical position. We placed them in the garage, master bedroom, and kitchen. They work perfectly even though the distance between the two furthest apart is over 120 feet. We are planning to build a new out-building, a two story office for me. You can rest assured I will purchase two more of these intercoms.

Comments about RadioShack 4-Channel 900MHz Wireless Intercom with VOX Mode:

I needed to communicate with my mother who lives on a lower floor. This product was all that I could ask for. The only thing I wished for was to be able to keep the product locked so I could constantly monitor my mother and still be able to talk to her if needed since she was unable to use the talk button and she talked to low for the VOX. But that is easily solved with purchasing a second unit which will enable me to talk to her when she calls for me. Excellent product. Range was more then efficient and the sound quality was great. I would highly recommend this product.

Comments about RadioShack 4-Channel 900MHz Wireless Intercom with VOX Mode:

Mom was quite ill, and caregivers and family needed a way to communicate without hollering (particularly to my downstairs office). I think I've got four sets right now.

Mom's passed on, so it's just "general intercom".

The only downside is that "push the button and wait for the beep" silliness. No idea what they were thinking.... It confuses _everybody_ who tries to use them.

Fairly large house, and there appear to be no range issues.

Bought at retail store, they said it was compatible. It is NOT compatible with older models. Web support from Radio Shack was WORTHLESS. They referred me back to the dealer who said it was compatible in the first place. I have another use for it without connecting to my older model. Very disappointed with support.

I'm caring for my elderly Father, who lives across the street . We have one of the intercoms at our house and one at his . We can hear him perfectly and he us . He does not have good vision so using phone was out and this intercom is a blessing. Makes him feel comfortable , and in control with us just steps away.

Comments about RadioShack 4-Channel 900MHz Wireless Intercom with VOX Mode:

I Use this intercom to monitor my wife who has MS. The VOX (voice activated) button is a nice thing to have but does not work well in our application because my wife forgets to speak up louder when she needs assistance. I will sometimes miss her call even when the VOX is set to high. (RS next generation 43-124's should have a thumb wheel to adjust the VOX sensitivity, similar to the volume control). My wife is also unable to press buttons

I later decided that I should not use the VOX feature but to monitor my wife for all sounds, choking sounds etc. To overcome the duplex issues mentioned above, I purchased another set of intercoms. We both now have two units with each set to a different channel. One unit is dedicated to monitoring and the other is to listening. I can now work hands free, similar to talking on a speaker phone. Oh yes; keep them apart (or have a few objects between them) and you will not get audio feed-back

Comments about RadioShack 4-Channel 900MHz Wireless Intercom with VOX Mode:

A senior lady came to live with us recently because she could no longer take care of herself living alone. She lives on the first floor of our ~3000 sq. ft. two-story house. We needed a way to hear her if she called for help when no one was within earshot. She can't/won't remember how to use new gadgets, so we couldn't rely on a system that required her to push any buttons. We've found the always-on baby monitor systems less than ideal for our situation because they transmit every little sound instead of just calls for help and don't have an easy way to speak back to the monitored person.

We've had two pairs of these wireless/vox intercoms for several weeks now, and we're all very satisfied. We mounted one on the wall in her bathroom (which we take down during baths - not sure how well the electronics would stand up to a steamy shower room,) one in her bedroom and a third in her sitting room. The fourth we leave upstairs.

We've found the VOX mode on high/most sensitive setting is enough to pick up raised voices (calls for help to outside the room) but usually will not pick up quiet conversation. If she calls for help within at least 20 ft. (direct line-of-sight) of a unit in VOX mode it will trasmit. The VOX does not seem to work around corners well at all; thus we opted to get a second pair instead of trusting just one unit to monitor everywhere she might be. The VOX does sometimes transmit louder, non-voice sounds like a toilet flushing or the washing machine down the hall, but so far it hasn't been irritating to folks in the house.

When we had three units on in VOX mode (bathroom, bedroom, and sitting room) we got rather frequent feedback loops between the units. We've started using only two units in VOX mode at any given time, and we rarely have feedback issues anymore.

As long as we, her caretakers, remember to keep the units in position and in the correct settings, this is working great! She has learned to speak up if she needs us but doesn't see anyone around. The intercom sends that call to us, and we're able to speak back to her through the system. She doesn't have to remember to work any gadget at all. The unit we leave on upstairs at night makes very little noise at all and has not disturbed anyone's sleep when she didn't actually need help.

We got rechargeable batteries for all the units. If we need to step outside, we can take one unit out in the ~1/4 acre yard including detached garage and the wireless connection still works fine.

We haven't had any problems with the wireless connection. The house also has four wifi 802.11n devices, various mobile phones, a microwave oven, and a DECT 6.0 cordless phone system for the landline. The signal and voice quality over these intercoms with all that stuff running seems just fine. I did change the intercoms to a different channel after noticing the range of the DECT 6.0 cordless phones dropped off a bit. That seemed to fix it. Other than that, we haven't noticed any crosstalk or lower bandwidth on any of the devices.

One of the caretakers is pretty tech savvy while the others strive to be as tech inept as they can get away with when it comes to electronics. I'm the tech savvy one, and I read the directions and set these intercoms up. I found the instructions clear and easy to follow. I found the intercom units well designed and easy to use, but the switches for channel and battery-type are very tiny and required using a pointed object to set. Then I trained the tech inept to use all but the tiny channel and battery buttons which I'll take care of. Neither of them has had any more trouble understanding how these work and learning to use them than they have with any other small electronics.

The only real "con" for us is that only one unit can transmit at a time. If the VOX has triggered one unit to be transmitting, then you cannot transmit from any other unit until it stops. It would be nice if the system was full duplex instead of half duplex.

Overall, this system is great for us. It's doing exactly what we wanted, and I would recommend it to anyone taking care of someone who can remember to holler for help but can't remember to push buttons. In shopping around, I didn't find any other device that came even close to features that would work for us as well as this one does.
