Comments about RadioShack® Digital AM/FM Pocket Radio:

According to Radio Shack, this unit is made by Sangean (though it doesn't seem to match any of their current lineup). I took it apart and found that it's based on a modern DSP chip (KTMicro KT0913 - not the well-regarded Silicon Labs chip mentioned in an earlier review).

I can confirm that it performs great on FM: It pulled in every fringe station that my better Degen and Tecsun portables could.

The audio quality of the built-in speaker is terrible (basically a mylar diaphram headphone driver) but the headphone amp sounds fine and FM is stereo via headphones.

Like most small radios it lacks a stereo/mono switch for FM and the audio mutes between frequencies during tuning, making band-scanning a pain.

Overall, it's a solid performer in a durable-looking case with a big display. As others have mentioned, the AM suffers from the tiny loopstick antenna inside.

Also keep in mind that there are many Chinese alternatives in this price range (from Kaito, Tecsun, Degen, Meloson, etc) that have shortwave bands and better speakers, though most are slightly bigger too.

Comments about RadioShack® Digital AM/FM Pocket Radio:

I listen to the local classic rock station with ear buds. It has good reception on FM with true stereo.
The built in speaker is not that good. AM reception is poor.

Comments about RadioShack® Digital AM/FM Pocket Radio:

I have tinnitus and use a radio at night in bed to mask the ringing in my ears. Had an old radio that worked for years that finally broke. Purchased this and had nothing but trouble with it.... It will not work at night on AM. Runs for 10 minutes then just quits and cannot be turned back on. Digital screen shows all sorts of scrambled letters & numbers then blacks out. Next morning it will work, but all the pre sets are wiped out. Taken it back three times. Radio Shack refuses to recognize problem. They say it works fine when they play it for 2 minutes in the store. Very frustrating....

Comments about RadioShack® Digital AM/FM Pocket Radio:

I wanted to like this. The FM reception is OK but the AM is very poor. Will not get locals at the high end of the band. Sound is OK for the size. Antenna does not swivel and is begging to get broken.
AM so bad I returned it. Twice.

Comments about RadioShack® Digital AM/FM Pocket Radio:

Good FM reception and OK sound BUT AM is pretty bad. Seemed OK up to about 1000KHz but then reception just fell off and it was unable to hear local stations.
FM antenna does not swivel either: just asking to get broken.
This could have been cool radio but isn't.
