          The device seems to be Everlight ALS-PDT243-3C/L451, as mentioned by ScienceGeyser.
          Nevertheless, the Voltage Output vs Illuminance chart of the datasheet seems to me a bit odd (0-20 lux...).
          I am using it as a luxometer in an Arduino, fed at 5 V with a 100 ohm resistor, and it is quite linear from 0 to 1000 lux (I have calibrated with a hand-held light meter).

            This device is designed to replace CdS cells in RoHS compliant devices. This is not intended to be used as a high-speed sensor for use in beam break sensors or light communication devices. In fact, if you put this device under a lamp that is flashing at 120Hz (most lights in your house), you will see that the signal is relatively flat compared to the signal you'll get from standard phototransistors or light-to-voltage converters. This is actually a requirement for some uses since lights driven by line voltage often flicker at 120Hz and this could confuse devices that are looking for a steady signal.

            I believe that this device is the Everlight ALS-PDT243-3C/L451 and you can find the datasheet here - http://www.everlight.com/datasheets/ALS-PDT243-3C-L451_V1_datasheet.pdf

            Sadly, the datasheet does not give any rise time or fall time specs but I did a few measurements and it looks like it has a rise time of about 50V/mS @ 3V Vcc and a fall time of about 0.4V/mS @ 3V Vcc.

            Photos below show a comparison of the RadioShack Ambient Light Sensor to the TSL257 Light-to-Voltage Converter.

            The bottom line is that this device works very well for most ambient light measurement applications where the need for line frequency filtering is undesirable (space constraints like small robots) and fast response is not necessary (faster than ~10mS).

              As has been said before the device is rather sensitive and that is exactly what one ought to desire from a light sensing device. In order to control Lux sensitivity appropriate light insulation and resistor values need to be selected (or experimented).

              I am using these to drive current to a pair of small DC motors to "chase" light sources.
              Pair with 4 in-series AAA batteries, LM386 Op-Amp and a couple wires... kids love 'em.

                I used this on an Arduino project set up as Zack has suggested. Mine where extremely sensitive. The smallest amount of light, even through the bottom of it and it will switch.

                It's a straight-up phototransistor. You can Google this to get more information about how to use it.

                For Arduino, create a voltage divider with this and a 1M resistor to sense bright light.

                Since it has no internal amplifier, you may want to buffer it through an op-amp or high-gain transistor to stabilize the readings.

                For interruptor or coupler applications, use a clear LED with a high brightness (mCd) rating. It's not sensitive enough to detect diffused lights well.
