Comments about RadioShack® 3mm Ambient Light Sensors (5-Pack):

You may be inclined to think the short lead (flat side) is cathode (-)... you are thinking LED. This may look like an LED but it is a phototransistor. It can take photon (light) and convert to a voltage and current. The flat side (short lead) alighs with the Collector in this device and the long lead the Emitter. The collector gets the +V applied to it. Using it with a 1M ohm resistor on the emitter side to ground and also to an Arduino analog port to read it. Wish there were full specs... one of the downside to buying Radio Shack components. Shows voltage range 3-24V and dark current 0.1uA. I suspect Emitter to Collector Breakdown Voltage is 5V or above on aacount of the fact I had it hooked up backwards (to Arduino +5VDC going into emitter side). I am showing sensitivity to a low wattage CFL bulb behind a lamp shade 6 ft away (only light source). I can place my hand near the sensor and see it react so it is working. I don't think it is "low senitive" but believe because lens is water clear its peak maybe in IR range though likely sensitive though full visual range.
