Comments about RadioShack® 3D LED Cube Hobby Kit:

this was fun right from the start. i bought it on a whim after seeing other cubes and wanted to give one a try. it will test your ability to do precision assembly and soldering. and dont worry about the led size so much as the brightness. test them before soldering. you MUST cut the resistors FLUSH to the bottom or shorting WILL occur! once cut flush you might want to insulate the ends of the wires with clear nail polish. a small touch on the ends will insulate the bottom of the board completely. a note to the really crazy techs like me, this kit is EXPANDABLE!!!! this kit is a really good start to making a 4x4x4 or up to a 6x6x6 or more. of course you will have to add resistors for the other layers, but this board provides the base to build bigger that is needed for just such a project (you gotta build on SOMETHING!!) give it a try!!. i'm up to a 5x5x5 and it works great. i bought a second kit to get the spacing right and used the second board to drill a piece of wood for the 5x5x5 array spacing (i just used the 3x3x3 pc board to mark the wood then moved it over for the next rows, and set it up for 1000 led's!! this is a 10x10x10 array, haven't built it.... yet!) and yes you have to expand the software for this too. but then, what did you expect when you expand a project??

my scale on the stars is 1 to 10 and this is a 10 which rates as "great to start out but doesn't have to stop here, expandable, creative, good for teaching skills both physical and mental, electronic and software abilities"

this is what i call a "rare super kit in the making!!"

Comments about RadioShack® 3D LED Cube Hobby Kit:

I bought this kit on a whim while browsing Radio Shack. I had always wanted to build an LED cube, but never got around to ordering a kit before.

The most difficult thing is getting the LEDs bent properly and not breaking the leads. The instructions are good, but you need to be careful.

                  A couple of suggestions:
                  1) Add testing to make sure the LEDs are bent and connected in the proper polarity. Maybe a quick check for each LED and then another check for each group of nine.
                  2) There is no wire included to connect each 9x9 row. I used lead wire cut from some extra resistors I have, but this could pose problems.
                  3) after building the kit it is important to trim all of the leads flush with the bottom of the board. Diagonal cutters will get you close, but I had to trim the leads flush with a box cutter knife.
                  4) As a reference to (3) above, the trimmed leads of R4 and R5 will short out on an Arduino USB connector casing if/when the leads poke through the piece insulating tape supplied. Another reason to trim the exposed leads flush. Maybe R4 and R5 could be repositioned on the circuit board to avoid this.
                  5) The link to the documentation and example program in the printed instructions is long and prone to typos. It would be easier to point someone to the Product page, and then provide a link to the blog page with the instructions, etc...

This would be a good intermediate build kit for a group of kids who have some soldering experience. The program example is very well documented and understandable.

You just need a Arduino Uno Board for this to completely work! They should really put this requirement on the box itself.

Comments about RadioShack® 3D LED Cube Hobby Kit:

Not for first time soldering users, or the impatient do it your self'er. However if you get through the construction phase, uploading the file to the arduino and getting visual results is immediate. Finishing the build is satisfying though.
The only thing I would add to make it better(and give it five stars) is if it had an audio input to use the LED's like a VU meter. I may still hack it and try though on my own. A0-A5 are all open on this kit so some type of input could be added.
