Comments about RadioShack Tricolor LED Strip:

On sale in stores for $7. Don't pay full price - the Adafruit Neopixel strip has twice as many LEDs, the LEDs are individually addressable, and is the same price.

LEDs are only addressable in groups of three. Very bright. Nice silicone plastic sleeve. You need an Arduino to make this strip work, it is not standalone.

Works Okay With Pololu Driver Libraries

      Best Uses

Comments about RadioShack Tricolor LED Strip:

Okay... This is a neat LED strip, but if you're using it with Arduino, it's important to have some good libraries for driving this thing. The ones Radio Shack is supposed to supply (but doesn't link to on this page and are hard to find) are very complicated and are pretty awful for beginners to use. Here's what you do:

        1) Check out the video from Youtube user jasmine2501 called "Radio Shack Tri-color LED Strips How-to" -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_GXhJeCDD0

        2) Here's a link to the Pololu libraries that will make this strip work -- and help you incorporate it into other projects: https://github.com/pololu/pololu-led-strip-arduino/releases/tag/1.2.0 This LED strip uses the low-speed TM1804 chips to drive the LED's.

jasmine2501 uses driver version 1.1.0 in his video, but 1.2.0 will work. You don't want a more recent version, because the newer versions only work with the *high-speed* TM1804 chips found in other light strips.

If you're a beginner, I'm not sure you want to start with this one... but it's fun if you're up for a challenge -- or have someone to give it to if you give up.

        • Experimentation

Comments about RadioShack Tricolor LED Strip:

Easy to set up and get going with an arduino once you find the files and sketch. As stated sketch is low level C, but there is absolutely nothing to help you figure out how it all works. You are left to hack and experiment. Funny thing is the command to light to red, actually lights to green and vise versa. Anyone else seeing this? The HEX values for green and red look correct just not sure what is up with the device. You need an arduino to use this product. I used a Arduino Mega. Just need to comment and the #define code at top for Uno and un-comment out the #defines for Mega.

These are nice, after you learn how to mod the scetch they can make flexable pattrens, the way it's programed (loding data from device 1 to 2 to 3 in a dasiy chain seems a bit slow but it does work
the setch was hard to find but i did find a working link from another persons post here

Comments about RadioShack Tricolor LED Strip:

Everything worked fine for me. Hooked it up as described. Copied the code into an empty Arduino IDE, compiled it without any issues, downloaded the code and watched it run the example. Was a bit mislead by the name though. It should be TriLED. You have control of 10 sections with 3 LEDs in each one which display the same RGB color. I thought I would have RGB control over each LED. Not a triad of them. But it works fine and I am sure I can find a cool project to use them in. I recommend them.
However. I caveat. The code is Lowest-Level C. It's not your everyday Arduino stuff. Simon Monk's new Programming Arduino "Next Steps" is very good and explains these coding techniques used for performance enhancement. I highly recommend it for advanced users of Arduino.

Comments about RadioShack Tricolor LED Strip:

Like the previous reviewer says the web address to download the support files does not work. I called customer service and they gave me the correct web address though, here it is:

            http://blog.radioshack.com/2013/06/tricolor-led-strip/

I haven't had a chance to get to work with it yet and I'm new to arduino programming but wanted to get that info out for anybody else frustrated with the wrong address.

            As can be expected

Comments about RadioShack Tricolor LED Strip:

Ugh, the RadioShack information is useless. The booklet that comes with the device points to a non-existing document on the RadioShack site.

Once you managed to actually find that document though through web archives, it points to a non-existing place to download the Arduino Sketch from (like the previous reviewer said).

In short: No worse than any other information you can expect to get from RadioShack or their employees.

Anyway, if you want to find the sketch, Google for "RadioShack Tricolor LED Strip Support Files". There is a blog post from Colin Carter that describes it.
