Comments about RadioShack® Synthesized World Receiver:

This particular radio is a rebadged version of the Sangean ATS-505, a superb set. I snagged this radio at my local Radio Shack for $43.00 brand new, and it was an absolute bargin. I am tempted to go back tomorrow and snatch up the last one!

Comments about RadioShack® Synthesized World Receiver:

I very seldom bother to write a review but I was so impressed with this radio I felt like I had to say something. This is a surprisingly good radio. AM DX'g is great. At night I can pickup AM stations from all over the country. I am located in Memphis. SW receptions is as good as I've had. I usually use a long wire external antenna with excellent results. Sound is not a problem since I always use an ear bud.
I tried a Grundig S450DL Field Radio last week and took it back. This Radio Shack model put the 450 to shame.
I would not hesitate to recommend this radio to anyone.

Comments about RadioShack® Synthesized World Receiver:

I bought this to replace a Grundig G6 that had stopped working. It was on sale for 60.00. SSB reception on the ham bands worked exceptionally well for this class of portable receiver.

Comments about RadioShack® Synthesized World Receiver:

This is a nice unit at the sale price.
          AM is adequate
          FM is quite sensitive
SW is ok to use for casual listening.
I have a lot of experience with expensive amateur and commercial units, the few shortcomings at this price are to be expected, but overall this is a nice unit for the sale price.
The problems noted about noise could have been from batteries that were almost dead, the lo bat message is not on until they cause noises due to low voltage making the unit squeal on some strong stations.
The units reception is going to be affected by metal walls around it or a car body surrounding it.
Properly used for $59 I have no complaints.

Comments about RadioShack® Synthesized World Receiver:

My original review indicated this was a very good unit, rated 4 stars with only minor things keeping it out of the 5-star ranking.

Last night and the previous night, had started hearing very rapid chirping sounds or whistling. Just assumed it was radio interference from all the computer equipment in my bedroom. Last night I shut it all off and it was worse than the night before. If I switched to SSB and tuned the "Clarify" dial to reduce whistling, howling, chirping sounds, then switching back... it seemed to resolve the issue... at first.

I brought it to work with me this morning and turned on the unit to the last frequency used and the problem returned. I am not sure if this is a problem particular to this unit, since it was mentioned before that a defective unit was returned to a store where I thought they had 1 in stock.

It's too bad really, since I was totally digging this receiver. The FM and AM still sound excellent, with the AM slightly under-performing in comparison to a low-end radio.

Comments about RadioShack® Synthesized World Receiver:

As other reviewers have said, this radio is a
Sangean 505 made for Radio Shack. To their credit
RS did have them eliminate the muting when it's
                  tuned.

It's OK for broadcast use but if you wish to
listen to sideband or code(cw) be aware that
as one reviewer said,it's basically a Sangean
404 with a bfo (clarifier) tacked on.

Stations put in memory do not activate the bfo
when selected, you have to manually turn it on (and off).
Strangely the bfo only works on shortwave...
no exalted mode allowed on longwave.

A band selector button is used. You cannot direct enter a shortwave freq.if you're listening to a local AM station, for example...have to go thru the
                  band button first.

The size is neither fish nor fowl. It's not
small enough to be handy nor big enough to be
a desktop. It takes both hands to operate, one to
                  hold,the other to tune.

A little bfo "warble" was noted on very strong
sideband/cw signals but this was minor compared
                  to some other brands.

All of these things are not major annoyances but
as in computing,it's always "the little things".

This sample did not have FM feedthru on a 50 foot
wire on HF.Sensitivity on the whip was OK but a drop off was noted on the low end of the AM band.
FM was fine.Longwave was average. No synthesizer
noise was heard anywhere,to Sangean's credit.

So the bottom line is that if you want a pleasant
sounding set for general use and available locally, this one should do nicely.

Comments about RadioShack® Synthesized World Receiver:

This is a replacement for a RS shortwave radio I bought twenty years ago. I like this one better for a few reasons, and prefer my old radio for a few reasons. Bear with me.

I like the size. At the same time it's bigger than my old radio and thus bulky to slip in my computer bag. I like that it is bigger so my fat fingers can work the controls and the display is large and well lit. I'd like the buttons to be backlit for easy use in complete darkness.

Another RS radio to look at is the Grundig G6. I bought one of those for my wife and we really like it though the big time zone dial takes up too much space when the radio could have controls more like the RS Model: 20-125. The 20-125 would have been grand but the that radio was a mess. Poor reception on all the frequencies. Liked the size and controls though. I like this RS#: 20-629 radio better than the 20-125 hands down even if the 20-125 had good reception.
