Comments about RadioShack 1/8"" Stereo Phone Plug (2-Pack):

I read the bad reviews of this plug but bought 2 packages anyway. I needed to shorten three 1/8" stereo male to male computer audio cords to fit nicely in my ham radio set up. I had no problems soldering them. Here's how to do it:

          1. Use a 15 watt soldering iron with a fine tip.

          2. Tin all wire leads. Slip the plug case over the wire.

          3. Use a vise to hold the plug horizontal.

          4. Tin the plug connecting tabs.

          5. Solder the common/ground connection first.

          6. Solder the tip connection.

          7. Solder the ring connection.

          8. Slide the cover up and screw it onto the jack.

          9. Check connections with a multimeter.

I was three for three. No problems.

I gave it a 4 because there is no insert for thin audio cables. The relief section hole was too large for common computer sound cables that use 1/8" stero plugs (they usally have green plugs).

Comments about RadioShack 1/8"" Stereo Phone Plug (2-Pack):

I have had trouble with Shack components quality before but it is the only place near me to get such things so I thought I would try it again. FYI I am electronic tech and have been trained to solder by NASA certified techs. The internal plastic of the connector is so a low temp plastic that it is almost impossible to solder to it with out melting the connector and destroying it.
If you are a trained tech, have an excellent soldering iron and excellent vision, you might get it. Otherwise you hobbyists don't bother. I resorted to splicing two cables together to get the length with the ends I needed.

Comments about RadioShack 1/8"" Stereo Phone Plug (2-Pack):

Great connector I see most people like it it's the ones whose plastic melted really may not know exactly how to use it. I recommend using a low wattage soldering iron, smallest diameter solder w/ rosin core, and short heat up time. Remember your melting solder the rosin core cleans the connection. Overheating of any connector can happen. Use small work times don't just hold the iron on it very long. Tin your connections both wire and connector it won't take as much time to heat up both when they are pre-tinned together. Using heat shrink tubing on the strain relief to give it extra strength (I did due to my daughter is rough on them). If you not sure about how to do it properly check YouTube.

I read a lot of bad reviews so I was worried about this. I tested the connections with an ohm meter before soldered it and they were all good. Tinned the wire and terminals before soldering them and it went together fine. I did have to use some heat shrink tubbing to keep the wire tight in the strain relife, but otherwise it worked perfectly. Saved me $30 on new headphones.

I needed a jack to repair my earbuds as it's original jack no longer received a connection.
I got this jack and got ready to wire it up, then I didn't know which wire went to what pins. Luckily the employees at the store I bought it from knew and gave me the advice I needed when I called as there were no instructions that came with this.

On both of the jacks I used I got the right earbud to work fine no problems, but the left earbud never had a good connection I would get static sound no matter what I did. Also when the plastic melted on the first jack, the right earbud, which was fine, got very faint, yet the solder connection was good as there was great sound before.

Also the plastic melted quickly, faster than hot glue! and the left earbud pin fell out of the first jack I used.

For the other jack it just refused to get a good connection! The right had sound but had it's fair share of static and the left wouldn't work at all.

This was designed by a bunch of idiots who have never used their own product. Who puts low temp plastic on something that's going to be soldered on? This design flaw caused many problems. Also they should have had a better connections to the pin, especially for left sound as it never had a worthy connection.

                          What a piece of junk.

Original Bose Quiet Comfort plug pulled apart from the wire. Solder 3 wires. Green to L, Red to R, Copper to center Ground. I used fingernail clippers to trim the wires and fibers. Needlenose pliers necessary, smaller is better. Earlier comment regarding small solder and iron is good advice. Also used ViseGrip to hold plug vertical while I worked. After crimping the ground flange to the insulated wire to hold in place, I also tied an overhand knot to rest inside the black cover and take stress off the crimp. It works and seems stout enough. Ergonomically better than original. Sound quality seems as good as original.

Problem is problematic connection from the connector tip to its solder lug. Amazing such a problem could exist. These things have only been made for like 50 years, and it ain't rocked science. The way around it is to solder the lug to the tip post manually. Takes a lot of heat.

Soldered the tip pin directly to it's terminal to finally use.
Soldering difficult without cleaning and scapeing of ALL terminal surfaces for reasonable solder adhesion.
Recommend additionally, use of solder paste be applied for better solder flow on ALL terminals after cleaning terminals as indicated above.
