Comments about RadioShack Pre-Punched IC-Spacing Perfboard:

I am a circuit designer, and I've been using these for years, if not decades, to wire prototypes, and personal projects. Its the lowest cost perf board on the market. I always buy the largest size, then score-n-break it to the sizes I need. The only down side, is that it is a tad brittle, so a little care must be exercised, while wiring it. I "drill" holes, or enlarge existing holes with an X-acto knife. Even slot them. I also use perf board from other vendors, when I need, say, a ground plane, so I'm very familiar about what's on the market. You can't beat this stuff at this low price !

Comments about RadioShack Pre-Punched IC-Spacing Perfboard:

I make analogue synthesizers, specifically modular analogue synthesizers. When building a module, you generally have to fit it into a certain, usually small, space. This perfboard is perfect because it is cheap (way cheaper than getting a PCB), very easy to cut (I use the glass method: score on the dots and break), and is very tough. And, perfboard has the added advantage of being able to wire it by hand, which thus makes for smaller circuits (which, in this line of work, is incredibly useful). Only reason it's not 5 stars is because I've yet to try drilling or sawing it, but I imagine it would perform beautifully. Oh, and did I mention it's cheap?

              These Will Do the Job

Comments about RadioShack Pre-Punched IC-Spacing Perfboard:

This perfboard is absolutely the best bang for the buck you're going to get.

This is not the layered Fiberglas or resin board you might expect. Rather, it's simply a resin sheet, solid all the way through, with standard-size holes spaced on the standard 1/10-inch, for standard electronic components.

There are no copper lugs or copper plating, and I call that a plus. The wire leads on resistors and capacitors are more than long enough to reach to the next component in this kind of circuit construction, with plenty left over to make the occasional bridge between tie points. Copper lugs do little except fall off, in my opinion.

Yes, the holes sometimes wander out of a straight line. And yes, it's more brittle than layered boards. Yes it can be scorched if you really try--in which case you've probably overheated something.

However, none of that matters. This board is still near-indestructable unless you're building circuits to go into fighter jets. It will certainly stand up to falling off the top of a van (check your checklist before you drive off, willya), or probably to being dropped out of a 5th-story window.

If you absolutely need to place a component and the holes are a bit off, the usual solution is to enlarge a couple of holes with a 1/16" drill bit. Use the slowest drill speed you have. Sometimes it works to run the drill backward, and sort of wear the hole larger, instead of drilling.

But usually any 4, 6, or 8 holes are fine to use, even if the overall hole pattern wanders a bit. To trim to size, I cut mine with a coping saw. You can get quite a few smaller boards out of a 6 x 8 piece.

The key element is price. If you're reading this you probably know that perfboard prices are amazing. What obviously should be a 99-cent board sells for 7 dollars or more. Mind boggling.

But these Shack boards are far more reasonably priced, and will do the job in your car or boat, or at the gig. Or in your airplane if you're not a fighter pilot. Priced right and they do the job, what else is there?

This has got to be the worst perfboard I've ever seen. The lines of holes wander all over the place. It's OK for discrete components, but good luck getting an IC socket or header pin strip to fit.

On the other hand, it's fairly cheap, and easy to break into smaller pieces.

Comments about RadioShack Pre-Punched IC-Spacing Perfboard:

I wanted to chime in after seeing reviews that claimed hole spacing was off, or the board was brittle.
I've used hundreds of these panels over many years without any problems at all, including featuring them in construction articles for builders who also had good luck. I have circuits built on these boards more than 20 years old that look the same as when I made them. It's a very good product. I've never once found that there was any spacing issue with a chip, and I don't believe you will either. So order on that count with confidence.
The only reason I don't give a full 5 stars is that unlike some glass boards, these are a LITTLE more delicate to drill as claimed (though they don't splinter like glass, and they cut and shape easier)! If you get them hot with your iron, you'll get an unattractive but harmless little burn since these are a plastic. (It cleans up with flux remover, or scrapes off with exacto.)
Great product. No problems. And a bargain for the size! 6 X 8 !!!

Use for telescope power supplies, audio projects, amplifiers, etc. Easily cuts with fine hacksaw, drills easily with slow motor, spacing is perfect for multiple DIP sockets, components. No tinned holes that tend to short out closely spaced leads. Great product for breadboarding/design layout to ensure everything fits best for my projects.

This product is perfect for the beginner, like me! However, if your going to make some really professional grade stuff with this thing, your out of luck. I read another review posted that said that the board was too brittle to drill a screw through. I'm with ya on that one, but I would start thinking about glue as an alternative to screws. I'm currently making an ATM machine for the kids at my church, so I'll keep the comments into consideration next time I buy one of these again.
