These little jacks work great. I'm no expert with electronic components, but, I can trace a circuit. I agree with other users that the diagrams can be unclear, or even wrong! If you don't know how to use an Ohms meter, simply load any of the pins/bands using a 1.5V battery and check for voltage.

This is a good product, but I don't know what happened to the little diagram that came with it, and they aren't available online. There are two pins going down and one pin going to the side. I don't know what a tip and a ring are. Which ones are the ground, left, and right?

The suggestion below regarding left and right channels is incorrect. The tip is actually the left channel and the ring is the right channel.

The worst thing is goin to the store to get it. I belive Radio Shack is just ignorant as company policy.
Example 1: Went in to buy some wire the sales assoc. wants my name, address , phone no. I respond it is for cash he tells me I am being ignorant so I ask him whats ignorant about not wanting a mailbox full of junk mail or annoying phone calls a dinner time? It's not like the company is goin to mail me a catalog.
Example 2: Went to get a motorola to to '88 up GM antenna adaptor All I got was the deer in the headlights look.
Example 3: Today I go to buy the 1\8 audio jack I got there early was the first customer the sales assoc was on the phone for 5mins explaining to someone why they could not return an item. Finally found the audio jack in some drawers of loose parts and he would not ring it up as he said he needed to wait on other customers.
I going to buy else where the sooner Radio Shack
goes out of bussiness the better!

Hard core little plugs, I use them for all kind of applications. Use them as remote triggers with some Arduino projects like voice boxes. Last use was on a TV HACK. Use one on the speaker I was using to manipulate the the magnetic coil. See Videos.....

Ask Radio Shack for a simple tutorial in how to use a multi-meter to check for continuity. Anybody who attempts to wire into any electrical system without the basic knowledge of using a multi-meter or continuity tester will undoubtedly have problems.
Just a small bit of knowledge goes a long way.

as far as the wiring diagram: simple but not obvious at first (I stared at it for a few minutes before it dawned on me). the "up" and "down" arrows aren't actually arrows, they're trying to show you a cross section of the jack. so when the plug is inserted, #2 will touch the tip, #3 will touch the middle ring, and #1 will touch the bottom. BTW the tip is right channel, middle is left and bottom is ground. You can also look inside the enclosure to see where the terminals touch the plug.

all the terminals look to be steel, and the jack itself is extremely small. it's all opaque black on the outside (so if you're seeing a picture with a translucent side on this item's page it's not correct). I would prefer that the jack's thread was a little longer but it suits my needs well.

Great for adding IR inputs to audio/video equipment. Easy to solder.

Used this jack to connect my Insteon Sensor to a thermostat relay. Worked great. Wasn't worried about left or right, I was dealing with +5 v, sensor, and grd. Wiring diagram was right on.
