Comments about RadioShack® 1/8"" Stereo Panel-Mount Phone Jack:

Save the bag it comes in there is a diagram and pinout on the back.

Have the connector laying with pins facing you and the jack portion to your left.

Pin 1 - closest to where you plug your headphones into it- IS GROUND

Pin 2 - just above the grond terminal - Left Channel Input from your amplifier.

Pin 3 is far right upper most pin - That would go to your left speaker and will disconnect the speaker when you plug in your headphones

Pin 5 is the bottom pin on the far right and is the Right channel input from your amplifier

Pin 4 is the pin in thee center of the jack and goes to the right side speaker - it too disconnects when the headphones are plugged in.

IF you are having a problem with the plug falling out - you need a new plug on your headphones. Some do not have the correct angle on the tip to retain it in most jacks, and they do wear, get bent, etc.
My headphones plug into this jack and stays secure even when when slightly tensioning the cord so if yours is dropping out check your plug.

Comments about RadioShack® 1/8"" Stereo Panel-Mount Phone Jack:

I needed a way to silence the remote speaker when a Stereo headset was plugged in and pass both channels to just the headset. This jack worked great.

Can not understand what others are having trouble with this product.

In car stereos even the negative speaker terminal should not be grounded - as are many Motorola radios audio output - grounding the audio - terminal can and will damage the output device. So if you loose audio thru this jack un-ground it and listen again. A non-polarized capacitor between the actual (-) lines can provide the "block" needed so the line is not DC ground potential.

You may have to insulate the mounting of the jack from vehicle metal - use a plastic, bakelite, or fiberglass plate to mount the jack to.

I have used several of these with no problem what so ever.

The other issue might be if you are using the speaker disconnect terminal instead of the actual jack input terminals. That too would cut your audio in half because your actually mixing left and right at the same time with no minus(-) line attached.

Comments about RadioShack® 1/8"" Stereo Panel-Mount Phone Jack:

I tried using this to add aux capability to a vehicle. I had the pins wired correctly, but could not get full channel audio on L or R with it. If I connected wires directly to tip and ring on the 3.5mm plug I had full fidelity. The same wires wired directly to the terminal on this jack with the same plug plugged into it gave me a half a channel. Wiggling a little helped, but I could never get it to complete a connection properly. It was secured through the hole properly where the plug made a solid connection in the jack, but there was either something wrong with my jack or this jack is poorly built in general. Odd, because it's a very simple device and should have been conducting properly over the terminals through to the plug, but it wouldn't.

Comments about RadioShack® 1/8"" Stereo Panel-Mount Phone Jack:

The worst thing about this component is the weak grip it has on the jack plug, it barely even makes a connection and is easy to wiggle loose. Another thing is the tiny soldering tabs make it nearly impossible to solder a piece of wire onto it without melting some of the plastic case and I doubt it can handle much power, anything over a couple of watts would be pushing it. One positive aspect might be the extra connections that disconnect when you plug in the jack which I suppose someone could use to implement some kind of jack sensing technology, but I have no use for this. The other 1/8" stereo panel mount audio jacks #274-249 seem like the better option.

Now I don't understand why the low reviews based on that it doesn't fit on a breadboard or PCB well. Its a PANEL MOUNT, its designed to mount to the case, NOT the PCB. You are wrong, not the part.

Two flatscreen TV's had no audio out jacks, so I disassembled the TV's, and wired this jack into the speaker circuit, such that the speakers would disconnect when a 1/8 inch plug was inserted. That way, I could connect a subwoofer/satellite speaker set for better audio. The onboard speakers were too small for any bass response. Yes, I'm an electronics tech, so this was easy.

I'll probably eventually figure it out, but I have no idea how to read the circuit diagrams or which of the pins to solder the wires to. RS should make videos or written explanations for this kind of thing.

I used this in my Canon remote shutter release. I panel mounted this, as it is what it is intended for. Easy to solder, and with the clear top you can visually verify the tabs.

It will be problematic if you try to mount it to breadboard/protoboard, but it is not designed for that.

Comments about RadioShack® 1/8"" Stereo Panel-Mount Phone Jack:

According to the reviews, it is difficult to connect to a pref board and such. This product is supposed to be panel mounted, not perf board mounted. If you want to use this on a PCB like 2 of these people wanted, you are supposed to use wire to connect it and mount this connector on a panel using the screw mount.
I have and am using multiple of this item and never had a problem.

You have to get creative to mount this connector on a perf board, the pins are not in a standard .010" configuration. Keep a small drill bit and a pin vise handy - you'll need 'em.
