Comments about RadioShack SO-239 Chassis-Mount Coaxial Socket:

Though there are many comments concerning the solderability, I found no problems soldering this item.

When soldering temperature sensitive devices, one should always use a heatsink to draw heat away from the heat sensitive material. This holds true for ICs, transistors as well as the material holding the center conductor of the PL-239 connector.

In this case, the PL-239 was used to replace an existing UHF connector in a dummy load. I mated a male 239 into the connector to serve as a heat sink, and used a small pair of vise grips to serve as heat sink to the material the PL-239 was being soldered to.

No problems were observed and the connector functions as designed.

Given the sheer number of sales of this connector, perhaps persons who are quick to complain should look to why they are having difficulty with the product. Perhaps they lack the requisite skills and or knowledge to properly use the product.

Using this product to build a portable 2 meter antenna for my ham radio. The plastic center melted quickly when soldering on the antenna element, just like another review mentioned. I'll drive the 45 miles to an store with better quality connectors.

I used this socket to make a NVIS antenna. It worked fine had no problem with heating up the socket to solder the machine screw to the center post.

Center conductor softens at low solder temp causing center pin to fall out. OK for a quick fix, otherwise, buy an AMPHENOL connector, they will hold up under the heat and not deform you insulator.
