This went into a 3v-powered project. It works just as well as when powered by 9v, without modification. I'm using a 2032 cell so it certainly won't run as long as a 9v battery, but a pair of AAs should work for a good long while.

I bought this thing to put together a quick halloween prop. I'm using an Arduino to trigger this module. Radio Shack please look around you and figure out how to make products like this easier to use with Arduino, Raspberry pi, etc. I don't mind taking the time to trace button leads but if you had just included easy to access jumpers on the board it would save tons of time and more makers would want to use it.

As many before have stated, I too, got a few of these to add some sound to a Holloween prop. Works well with a few modifications. My only request of RS is to make the activation button wired more like the record button to make thsi so much mroe "hackable".

Used this to create a sound effect on a halloween prop. So far, I've bought 2. It works great and is easy to use. Recording is simple and playback is decent quality - even through the tiny included speaker. You can make it remotely switched and play it through computer speakers (for even better sound), though it should be easier to do. Here is what I did:
1. unbend playback button off the circuit board and discard. Using a small soldering iron, carefully tin the contact pads. Then tack a couple of 30 ga (wire wrap wire) wires onto the pads below. This is small stuff and you could easily short out the pads with a glob of solder. I used a hakko soldering iron with a fine tip and a big magnifier to do this. Run the wires to a jack on the side of a case.
2. remove the speaker and replace with a 1/8" stereo jack, with Left and Right channels shorted together. It is directly compatible with a set of computer speakers.
3. Cut a square hole in some perfboard slightly smaller than the sound module so you can mount this thing. Use hot glue on the edges (where there are no components) to attach the circuit board. Then mount the assembly inside a project box.

This leads to my taking a star away from the rating. This thing has absolutely no nice way to mount it on anything. It is small, ESD sensitive, and has surface mount components right out to the edge. It wouldn't have cost much to use a bigger PCB and include a couple of eyelets to solder an external switch (or relay) across the existing one.

I found the previous schematic for this online and was interested in modifying it to create a looping device. Unfortunately, all of the components in the schematic I found have been replaced with super cheap quality chips so not only is it not modifiable (which would void warranty, obviously) but the length of time for which it could be used before breaking is very suspect. It's unfortunate that what once was a great and useful device will become another piece of abysmally cheap electronics that will fill a landfill in a year.

This is a great device to incorporate into home-made projects (self repeating SOS Am transmitter). I would recommend this to anyone who's an enthusiast. And this is obviously a cool gadget to have on hand for it's own benefits.

The only con is that I wish the components were modular. Such as the IC circuit. Although it's tucked away safe under the IC dome, I wish I could have red the parts numbers used in THIS particular product - for making my own versions.

This is an extraordinarily versatile module. We use it in a product that reproduces wildlife vocalizations in the field for reasearchers across the country. It can be encorporated into a circuit very easily with few components. The newer version (with separate condenser mic) has BETTER audio quality than the older single-speaker model. My only recommendation is that RadioShack assign SEPARATE PART NUMBERS for the two different models, as the circuits are very different, and those ordering them in large quantities can plan ahead for the product they're going to receive (right now, it's a luck-of-the-draw for which you get when you order, or go to the 276-1323 peg at a store). Please keep offering this great product!
