Low Price, Low Quality

Comments about RadioShack Multipurpose PC Board with 417 Holes:

I had not soldered in a number of years, so I bought this to practice on before starting on a personal project. I would not use this on anything I planned on later using. While soldering, the copper in-lays came off of the board easily and frequently. The silk screening often melted over other holes, rendering them unusable. The holes were also a bit close to each other, but this is no problem for one who is experienced in this field. Bottom line, I would only recommend this for practicing, because you get a lot of holes for a relatively small price.

Comments about RadioShack Multipurpose PC Board with 417 Holes:

Would be nice to see the same foil pattern in a larger size board. The hole spacing on this board is .100 and IC socket header strips fit just fine.

I keep spares at home, seems like my radio shack runs out or does not stock them

Comments about RadioShack Multipurpose PC Board with 417 Holes:

These boards are cheap and useful, but it's been a while. I do fondly recall when Radio Shack sold parts to experimenters instead of clock radios and toys. In that regard, it would be nice if they specified the hole spacing. I could swear they are standard 0.150", but wouldn't that be the kind of thing listed under tech specs? More than once I assumed a radio shack part was standard and it wasn't.

Comments about RadioShack Multipurpose PC Board with 417 Holes:

Over the years I've used dozens of these boards for hobbyist electronics projects, ranging from very simple breakout boards to the mainboard for a nixie tube clock. I like how you can have chips either straddle the center or the rows of holes to either side of it. Easy to solder. I have had a couple of pads come loose as others describe, but only when I've been desoldering and heated them a lot more than you usually would. Overall, terrific little boards.

Comments about RadioShack Multipurpose PC Board with 417 Holes:

I used this board to build a controller for a computer cooling fan. This board was versatile and offered a number of different configuration options. Just use good soldering techniques and a pointed 35 watt soldering iron to prevent the etch from lifting. (Yes some will try soldering with a 100 watt iron and they will get what they asked for, a destroyed board.)

Comments about RadioShack Multipurpose PC Board with 417 Holes:

Radio Shack used to carry a line of project boxes with mounting posts just right to fit all their universal PCBs. But none of the boards (which are the same they've sold for decades) fit into any of the line of project boxes Radio Shack now sells.

Comments about RadioShack Multipurpose PC Board with 417 Holes:

I've been using a variety of their boards for years. They're decent quality, good for typical hobbyist purposes.

I have NEVER had the problem some here mention about the pads lifting off during normal soldering. Not sure what those guys are doing, but don't that let keep you from buying this board.

The hole patterns are very convenient for typical thru-hole parts and make soldering fairly quick and easy. Great for mocking up prototypes before you get them printed up(if you go that route).

See my photo for several of the projects I've done with these boards.

Comments about RadioShack Multipurpose PC Board with 417 Holes:

This product was used to create an EEPROM READER.
It allows me to read back the eeprom from a game system so I could upgrade to a larger hard drive to it.

The things that really make this product great are the combined circuit holes. They allow me to share the same signal of a circuit component and jump it to a route it needs to be linked to.

There are not any bad things about this multi-purpose pc board with 417 holes. It allows me to do everything I needed to do with it. Thanks to Radio Shack, I don't need to worry about buying me an expensive CNC Circuit Board Engraving Machine. Or try to alternate to the basic PC Boards which don't have the available combined holes.
