I needed a replacement jack for my headphones.

This is a high quality connector. It appears to be well-built and designed. The pin terminals are strong and took solder easily.

The connector does provide strain relief, but I would not call it "heavy duty". My guess is that it will work fine for my office headphones, but I would hesitate to use it for my running headphones.

Overall a great quality item for the price.

I bought this adapter thinking it would be better for my application with its all metal construction. There is a terrible contact point inside this adapter. It only works half the time and I have to wiggle the connection to get it to work.

I would like to retract my previous review titled "Have you tried ..." in its entirety.

I confused myself as to the function of this adapter. In part because of its description "1/8" Stereo Plug to 1/8" Mono Plug Adapter" which should have been "1/8" Stereo Plug to 1/8" Mono JACK Adapter"; and, because I was was biased towards an application in which I was going to be using a "stereo plug to stereo plug" cable in conjunction with one of your "STEREO (JACK) to MONO (Plug) adapter(Model: 274-882 Catalog #: 274-882".

Barring the possibility that your supplier had a quality control problem that they / you have since corrected; the only explanation that I have for the terrible reviews dated 7/19/09 and 8/10/10 (ignoring the 3/15/10 reviewer who had just bought the adapter) is that the mono jack end of the adapter in not able to accommodate a stereo plug being plugged in and unplugged repeatedly in the long run.

In such a case, I would not be able to suggest anything since a stereo plug plugged into a mono jack should only result in leaving unconnected the right channel (source Wikipedia article on "TRS Connector" section titled "Mono and stereo compatibility"), which would be, in the case of most of the reviews, a desirable aspect. (It should certainly not "fail / break" in the manner that the 2 dissatisfied reviewers indicate.)

Have you tried ...

For those using this adapter to PLUG INTO A STEREO SOURCE and then plugged your ear-piece into the mono jack and have experienced problems after a few days:

I would guess that you are plugging into the stereo source in the jack meant for an ear bud. This is backwards of its intended function; and, you might be burning something inside the adapter.

What you really need is a 3.5mm STEREO MALE to 3.5mm MONO FEMALE ADAPTER.
In this case you would plug the male end into the source (e.g., MP-3 player) and your ear-bud into the female end.
It appears that Radio Shack does NOT carry such an adapter.

I would suggest that you try the following using items that Radio Shack does carry (with the possible exception of the female to female adapter (see the following):

step 1: Use a stereo to stereo cable to PLUG into your source (e.g., MP-3 player earphone jack)
step 2: Plug the other end of the cable to a Radio Shack STEREO to MONO adaptor (Model: 274-882 | Catalog #: 274-882)
step 3: Buy a female to female adapter. (Stereo should work fine). (Radio Shack MAY carry them)
Step 4: Plug the STEREO to MONO adapter into either end of the female to female adapter.
Step 5: Plug your ear bud / headset (stereo male plug) into the other end of the female to female adaptor.

Advantages:
You can distance yourself from the stereo source (by using the audio cable).
You will be using the correct adaptor (stereo to mono).
Disadvantages:
You now have 2 additional components inline with you source and ear-bud headset than you had before.

Maybe someone at Radio Shack will see the need to market a male stereo to female mono adapter.

I've had four of these to allow me to hear both channels from my zen using only one ear bud. All of the behaved the same way: great sound and happiness for a few days then sputtery sound and no idea of how to fix it. Each one finally got bent to hell and thrown out. I hate them.

I just bought this device the other day. I got it because I want to listen to my MP3 player with only one earbud but do not want to miss the other channel. I tested it with a music clip that had alternating sound between left and right. With just the earbud plugged in and in one ear, one channel was very quiet, but with this device in the line both channels came through at same volume level in one earbud, the other earbud was quiet. So that proves this device is combining the two channels. I found the stereo plug was a bit hard to push into this device and that may be because this device is made to accept a mono plug. I would prefer the device be rubber covered than metal, but hey, it works!

I'm deaf in one ear and use these with my iPod etc. I've probably purchased more than 20 of these adapters. I treat them gently but they always start malfunctioning, usually within a week. The connection becomes intermittent, doesn't matter which headphones I use. The internal connections are quite weak. The last one broke while my ipod was sitting on a table. Unfortunately I can't find another source for this adapter. I'm going to have a custom cable made, as I'm tired of paying for new ones.

This adapter is good for a mono to mono cable to connect to a loop antenna that connects to the antenna jack of a radio. This adapter is good for mono sources that need to be in simulated stereo.
