Power plugs are almost standard in the industry, and the 2.1mm or type M is the most common by a long shot. We use them to get 12 volts to GPS receivers. The part above is compatible with most plugs, but Radio Shack sells other panel mount jacks that will not work with standard plugs. You need 274-1563, and definitely not part 274-1582. Male plug 274-1569 is a good plug.

It would be better if the jack were insulated, and a front-mount nut would make installation in tight quarters better. Cannot have it all . . .

Best to order by part number, and do not depend on your local store to have compatible parts. With that said, Radio Shack is about the only place to get such parts.

A nice sturdy jack, but note that the outside of the jack will be connected to the positive voltage for a standard 9V guitar pedal power supply. If the pedal you're working on is grounded to the case, this will cause a short. Electrical tape wrapped around the shaft and under the washer and nut was effective for solving the problem in the project I was working on with minimal hassle.
