soldering gun that came with set perfect for light duty intricate work, from removing components off boards to soldering 18-20 gauge wires did a great job, and never even melted insulation while still getting wire hot enough to except solder

Comments about RadioShack 5-Piece Basic Soldering Set:

This works OK for the average weekend project. The main problem with this iron is with the tip, it is pretty much just copper. It will disintegrate after just one use. A good tip is copper coated with iron , copper for transferrig heat and iron to prevent corrosion. This tip has such a thin coating of iron that the solder will eat through it. No amount of tinning or care not to overheat will help. After just one job the tip becomes blunt.
The replacement tips are 2.99 a pop (Catalog #: 64-2065) and they too will not hold the shape, just read the reviews. So in essence if dont mind running to the store every time you need a tip get this iron, otherwise get a low end weller its not much more and beats this hands down.

Comments about RadioShack 5-Piece Basic Soldering Set:

I have NEVER lifted a hand to any projects of mine when it comes to quick repairs; but as of today, I can truly say that I'm glad I started using this item. As my $665 Hot Toys: Batman 1989 Batmobile came in a few days ago, I noticed that it immediately had electical issues to the Right tail lights. Further inspection prooved for the worse, as I pryed open the bottom to see what the issue was. Turns out that the wires to the circut board became loose and separated. For a few days I tried to get the wires to reattatch to the board by using wire glue; but there wasn't enough conductive power to keep the lights lit without me holding to wires in place with applied force. It's a good thing that I decided to start learning the many uses of a soldering iron for situations with LEDs and such prior to this event, raher than the usual superglue method which could've prooved fatal to the repairs. Money well spent, indeed.

Comments about RadioShack 5-Piece Basic Soldering Set:

This is a perfect soldering-iron for small projects. I've had this iron for 4 years never had a problem. I bought this iron to solder wires and connectors and small components for my RC planes that I build. This soldering iron is not intended for a work soldering iron of everyday use. I would recommend this soldering-iron, I keep the soldering tip clean after every use, to get the best results every time.
