Comments about RadioShack® 45-Watt Desoldering Iron:

I use this in a industrial setting, 40 hrs a week. It'll last up to 6 months before the element burns out. On a hobby level, where you might use it 1 hr a week at best, Ive had the same iron for the last 4 years. Watch my video about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSfTTgn-ewY

Comments about RadioShack® 45-Watt Desoldering Iron:

I bought this desoldering iron years ago it is somewhere between 15 and 20 years old and it still works great. It gets hot fast and the rubber bulb is still nice and pliable. My only complaint is that the tips do not last long radio shack needs to make them out of a more durable material.

Comments about RadioShack® 45-Watt Desoldering Iron:

I used it to remove some capacitors from a TV power supply. Did a very clean job. There are other suction type de-soldering guns available. But, being a heater and suction in one device makes a job lot easier and you can work in a small spaces. It is cheap enough to keep it even for occasional usage.

This makes desoldering objects off a circuit board SIMPLE. Whoever said iron doesn't get hot has a faulty one, mine gets very hot. The price makes this a no-brainer.

Comments about RadioShack® 45-Watt Desoldering Iron:

Not impressed to say at least. It seems that it generated a considerable amount of heat in the wand, but was unable to transfer it efficiently to the suction-head, It appears that much of the heat was transfer up the suction port, which requires it longer to heat up.

I was unable to successfully suck the solder around led lights that was in a modem board that I was harvesting for parts. You don't know when the solder is ready to suck because your vision is blocked, so you don't see the weld turn bright silver. Plus if you move the soldering tip off the weld, it cools off very quickly. You are stuck to keep a part of the tip on the weld, causing a pin hole to be created when you draw the solder because the edge of the suction port is partly over the other half of the solder.

If your suction is not center on the post, you draw the solder out of one side of the solder weld, which causing half of the post to be still soldered. More or less you end up with an air hole on one side of the post. This air hole prevents a good draw of the solder when you try to do it again. I spent much time wiggling the parts out with a pair of pliers, backing it up with heat from a soldering pen to make the solder liquid.

If the part you are trying to unsolder has a frame around it such as a power port, don't even think about it. The frame causes much of the heat to dissipate into the metal frame. I tried to back it up with my Weller sp23. No luck.

If you are unsoldering something that does not have a lot of solder, and the board is wafer thin. This could be your product. I am off to buy a 60watt soldering iron with a vacuum desolder tool, Radio shack: model 64-2098, to draw the solder out. Well, see how this works. Will post comments in its product section.

Comments about RadioShack® 45-Watt Desoldering Iron:

This thing is good to a limited extent. It does what it says it does and doesn't break down or what not. The only erro thease guy haven't got yet is that tips need to last at least a half a year if not more.
My iron in a month after what I call "typical" use
had a missing section to the tip. So now I know why i'm getting mad at my iron. IT'S THE TIP!!!!! So now I have to run to raido shack to get a replacement tip . But still if you need a good desolding iron get this one and if you get offered a "warnty" thing for some green, do it. That way if you land in my case you will not be sorry.
