Comments about RadioShack Coaxial Splicing Kit:

I accidentally cut thru the cable coax outside. Figured I'd fix it myself but I stink at making coax connections.

The Manager at Radio Shack recommended this product. It was easy to use, the instructions were clear and best of all, it worked the first time. It even came with mastic to keep the water out!

          I'll definitely buy this again.

          Thanks Radio Shack!

Comments about RadioShack Coaxial Splicing Kit:

Overall this is a very good product. I bought another as a toolbox spare. The stripping needs to be very precise near the inner conductor. Radio Shack products used to print actual-size stripping guides on the back of the package or a scale. That made things simple in the field. The measurement guide forces you to do some mental mechanics and you'll need a small scale or ruler handy.

Only problem I had was with the rear crimp. I have both round and hex crimpers but needle nose pliers will work fine. Make sure you collapse and over/underlap the tangs before you crimp, because they are quite large. Otherwise you create pinches and they may not fit into the boots. My only gripe is the sharp talon on the underside of the crimp. This isn't a good idea and you run the risk of shorting to the inner conductor with an uneven crimp. I bent it flat.

The mastic pads are very good but should be about an inch longer to ensure a guaranteed seal on the cable. I used some silicone afterwards for assurance.

I would suggest RadioShack stock a similar product with a pigtail length or loop of 12" already pre-attached to make up some length for "tight-wire" situations and improve reliability. This would be ideal rather than making two splices and adding some length purchased elsewhere since they don't sell raw RG6 by-the-foot.

I split my cable doing yardwork. This kit patched it back together. It comes with a thick tar 'mastic' that feels like it will be impervious to the elements for years.

Comments about RadioShack Coaxial Splicing Kit:

I bought this splice kit after I accidentally cut my CATV feed with a pick-ax. Oops.

I do describe myself as pretty handy, but this was my first work with RG-6 cable line. It was easy to understand; hence, I recommend it to anyone who feels okay with simple hand tools.

This product was just what I needed. I acquired a length of replacement cable (I cut the line in two different places) and proceeded to put in the new piece with the help of this kit. It took me about 30 minutes with some of the proper tools. I did not have an RG-6 cable stripper, nor did I have a hex crimper, but I survived without using a razor blade and a standard wire crimper, and I think a well-handled pair of needle-nose pliers would work just as well.

Anyway, if you find yourself in my situation, this is the kit for you. I can't speak for how well the mastic pads work as weather proofing, but they seemed to make a nice tight seal. I would describe them as 2x4" rubber sheets with roofing tar on one side. They fit easily over the whole connection, and I don't think they're coming off any time soon. It is going to rain here in the next few days, so I guess we'll see then how well it keeps moisture out.

Price is right, it's easy to use, and I would recommend it to anyone.
