        Get It While You Can!

            Comments about RadioShack MPF102 Transistors:

THE FAMOUS MPF102 is a superior product with many uses. For example: Electronic music, qrp radio, low and high-frequency oscillators and high-fidelity amplifiers. An MPF102 is a low-noise device. For a JFET, the MPF102 is exceedingly forgiving. You can reverse the drain and source and the MPF102 will keep on working.
The device is extraordinarily sensitive: It can pick up the light falling on a reverse-biased LED!

JFET GAIN isn't nearly as high as with a transistor. Yet the input impedance (sensitivity) is much greater than what you receive from transistors or Darlingtons. You can raise JFET impedance even more by bootstrapping. Another disadvantage of leaded JFETs is spec spread. Several parameters including gain vary by a factor of five. Often you can adjust the source resistor to minimize such gain differences.

FOR REPLACEMENT USE, the MPF102 is less versatile than are standard transistors. The reason is that JFETs don't switch on at the same voltage as transistors do.

I USE MPF102S in guitar preamps and effects. I also use the device in low-frequency multivibrators and timers. The MPF102's input impedance doesn't load the timing resistors as a transistor would. The MPF102 would be an excellent preamp for a high-impedance sensor. (Example: Pyroelectric device.)

STOCK UP on MPF102s while you still can. Vishay Siliconix isn't manufacturing this part anymore. Fairchild recently announced that it will cease making the MPF102 and several compatible devices. One of these is the excellent 2N3819, once an RS product. I believe that these versatile parts will become scarce. Short-run foundries will continue to source the parts, but might cause a price increase. Eventually RS might need to replace the MPF102 with a different JFET, say a 2N3822 or J113.

              Comments about RadioShack MPF102 Transistors:

Virtually the perfect audio amplifier transistor - easily created a 1-FET "direct box" type preamplifier INSIDE the connector of a XLR-to-quarter-inch cable. 2.2M ohm input impedance perfect for electric guitars, 2.2K output impedance perfect for microphone/low-impedance mixers. Uses 48V phantom power. Highly recommended!See: [@] ... but remember to substitute a 680 ohm resistor for his 2.2K source design. A magnificent design, sounds almost identical to a new old stock NOS 12ax7 preamplifier. In case the reference gets eaten up: [@]... substituting the · with .

The only FET now sold by RS but was the perfect fix for my mini-scope. The old J-FET was very leaky and this new one returned my scope to a linear sweep.
