Comments about RadioShack 2N3055 NPN Transistor: This transistor is NOT a high frequency unit. If the idea is to make a hi-freq driver for a flyback use a transistor designed for that frequency. This is a good solid switching transistor that most all TO-3 units need a heat sink. Flyback drivers of common configuration will work well with a 2N3773 or a MJE13009....but they all get warm.
Pros
Cons Best Uses Comments about RadioShack 2N3055 NPN Transistor: This power transistor can be used for numerous projects, including small 12 VDC to 120 VAC power inverters, small DC motor drives and even single transistor "Joule Thief" 1.5 VDC LED driver circuits. Be sure to use a heat sink for high power applications, since the transistor can run very hot.

Comments about RadioShack 2N3055 NPN Transistor: I have used this, or ones like it to build my own audio amps, and voltage regulators. These are great for expirementing with! They are very tolerant, but MUST be used with a fair sized heatsink.

Best Uses Comments about RadioShack 2N3055 NPN Transistor: Direct replacement for Pontiac Fiero dash light control transistor. Inexpensive repair.
Pros
Cons Best Uses Comments about RadioShack 2N3055 NPN Transistor: Using it to run TV flybacks it works great, but make sure you have a fan on it or it will fry in about three seconds. Great for lower freq's. Pros
Cons Best Uses Comments about RadioShack 2N3055 NPN Transistor: Not intended for high frequency. Designed for power supply pass transistor. Pros
Cons Best Uses Comments about RadioShack 2N3055 NPN Transistor: i tried using this transistor for a low power flyback transformer driver, but it wasn't very high frequency and it fried on a pretty low power; it's not the best transistor but i suppose if you're using higher power, not just amplification then you should put more than one in parallel.
