Comments about RadioShack 20 Assorted LEDs:

Basically they all need 20 ma. max . to determine what resistor to use in series , use the formula : R = E/I . So for 12 volts : R =12/.020 = 600 ohm . any value larger than 600 ohms will probably work. I use these for indicators in 24 volt AC circuits . The peak voltage from 24 vac is roughly 36 volts : 36/.02= 1,800 ohms . 2k resistor works fine !

Comments about RadioShack 20 Assorted LEDs:

this was good when I wanted to get started with electronics, because it gave me a variety of colors and sizes. unfortunately, the product was quite overpriced and now I use other electronics suppliers. If you are looking for a starter pack, and want reliable service, I would recommend this product. however, if you are looking for items on a budget, I would not really recommend this product.

Comments about RadioShack 20 Assorted LEDs:

There were multiple colors and the kids were facinated by them. They burnt out a few quickly by not using resistors.

The downside is I bought the package to get the whites. The whites are orange in color.

The package I purchased at one radio shack had NO voltage information on it. Later at another Radio Shack I saw a newer package with specs printed on the back. These seem to be in the 2.2 to 2.4v range.

Comments about RadioShack 20 Assorted LEDs:

The specifications are right on the package! I do admit that in the past, RadioShack has not put specs on these, but they do now!

          3mm Red are 1.8-2.0V @ 20mA
          3mm Yellow are 1.9-2.1V @ 20mA
          3mm Green are 2.0-2.3V @ 20mA
          5mm Red are 1.8-2.0V @ 20mA
          5mm Yellow are 1.8-2.1V @ 20mA
          5mm Green are 2.0-2.3V @ 20mA
          5mm Clear are 2.0-2.4V @ 20mA (these are yellow)

The spec. sheet also has wavelengths and intensities (the clear ones are really bright). I also attatched the actual sheet from the package, if you want anything else.

Electronics hobbyists need not fear, the spec sheet is here!

Comments about RadioShack 20 Assorted LEDs:

This is a good product. If you are not familiar with LEDs, be careful that you don't overpower them. You will smell a burning plastic smell and the light could change colors. Then it wont work at all. Usually LEDs like these run on 1.5-3vdc. They would not be good for flashlights but excellent for indicator lights. Overall a good product. If you are a hobbist and need random LEDs these are good for you.

Comments about RadioShack 20 Assorted LEDs:

Even Radioshack.com now offers no spec sheets on their components. Since these LED's a have different max Vcc and currents, some simply burn out while others run at, for example, 2.5 volts. To design a useful circuit i had to run my own polarization curve and sacrifice one.

This ain't my old Radio Shack!

Comments about RadioShack 20 Assorted LEDs:

Note that since it's a grab bag of led's the specs are different on them. That's why they didn't include the specs. It's a grab bag! and a decent one. Bought about three packages - they all work. And, at usual voltages of 3.3, 5 and 12vdc they ALWAYS need a current limiting resistor. Select something between the range of 220 ohms to perhaps 3.3k - start high, examine the color and light intensity. Use a smaller amount of resistance to make it brighter. When you get it too bright (damaging the led), it will often change color first (greens look more yellow when run with too much current for example). Works everytime. The stock values of 220 or 330 ohms are often a lot brighter than I desire. So I increase the resistance to about 1k usually. It's bright enough, doesn't suck as much juice out of battery powered devices and increases the already amazing long life these things have.

Comments about RadioShack 20 Assorted LEDs:

As a general rule, indicator LEDs such as these require 20mA of current for proper and consistent performance. They will work on a little more or a little less current than that. The LEDs drop a different amount of voltage depending on LED color; however, LEDs may be used at any voltage level as long as an appropriate limiting resistor is placed in series with it to reduce the current. Need to know what value resistor to use? Take the voltage at the point where it is to be included in the circuit and divide by 0.02--the number you get will give you the ideal resistor value. It is virtually impossible to ruin an LED when properly wired in a circuit.

These LEDs have worked wonderfully and without fail for me in numerous projects where visual indication is desired or necessary.
