Comments about RadioShack 4A, 400V Full-Wave Bridge Rectifiers:

Rectifier was installed in an 8W charging circuit for an 800 Joule capacitor bank. The device survived 3 charges at 240VAC before failing shorted. No damage to connected equipment as a ballast was present on the mains.

Tested the device using a reliable bench meter, measured shorted across AC input leads.

Looked up part number (Fairchild sem. - GBU 4G), and found that the device was rated for 280VRMS input, 400VDC reverse output.

However, that does not explain the failure, except for the possibility of a defective, or overall very poorly made product.

Comments about RadioShack 4A, 400V Full-Wave Bridge Rectifiers:

Does exactly what a rectifier should do - make DC out of AC. MUCH easier than 2 years of tech school and hours with a soldering iron, perf board and discrete components. I have used these for years to make "quick and dirty" DC power supplies for various equipment.

Radio Shack buys components like this thousands at a time, and checking every one for function and correct markings would more than double the price per unit. If it's not on the back of the packaging, a diagram should be printed, possibly on the front, under the device. Otherwise, delivers the goods at a great price. Highly Reccomend...

Toy Train guys, Lionel, MTH. You see schematics in the wiring books for an electronic switch to trip signals, crossing gates and other accessories, but they don't say exactly what components work. Well, marry the 276-1173 full wave bridge rectifier with the 275-0249 DPDT miniature PCC rely and you are in business. Cheap, really works, clean, and the wiring really isn't rocket science.

The markings are perfect. If you know how a full wave rectifier works, you know that the polarity doesn't matter for the AC input. Connect the two AC wires to the two AC pins, connect the negative pin to ground and, Viola, you get a positive output on the positive pin.

Clearly marked. It was easy to determine which pins were input and which were output.

This part I purchased in a store was so poorly marked, I had to come to the web to determine the correct pin-outs. The '+' was between pins 1 & 2, "AC" was centered over pin 3, and '-' was over pin 4. No marking on package or on website. To be clear, only 3 marks to describe 4 pins and not correctly placed at that. Poor QC at factory, no incoming inspection at RS.

Had there simply been 4 labels, the pins would not be ambiguous:
