I bought an Arduino last week and the fun of turning simple LEDs on and off had worn off. I stopped in at my local RS to see if there was anything I could plug into my breadboard and play with. Among other things I picked up one of these displays and had it working in a couple hours (including writing a sketch to control it).

At first I just had it turning all the segments on one at a time, blinking, and doing it over again. Then I programmed some numbers in Arduino, and mapped a potentiometer to numbers 0-9 so that as you turned the potentiometer CW the displayed number increased to 9.

Now, if you want to do much else with this thing (like add more than two to your Arduino), you're going to need to look into getting an 8-bit shift register for each display. Why? Because each display requires at least 7 pins on the Arduino (8 if you use the decimal point). Using shift registers you can daisy-chain as many as you like, with each one controlling its own display. And all you need are three pins from the Arduino no matter how many displays you're controlling.

My only disappointment is that you can only control the right-hand decimal point. There's no pin to control the left-hand decimal point even though there appears to be a cut-out in the display for one. This isn't really much of a disappointment though since there isn't much use for it. If you have multiple displays then the problem is solved. Plus, since there are only 8 LEDs to control on the display, the 8-bit shift registers are a perfect application.

the segments of the display are mapped for you on the back of the package. however 'anode X' still doesn't tell you which segment it controls until it is actually field tested. i don't recommend this product until it its diagram is clarified.

Great to be able to buy this at a local Radio Shack. Saves time and money over other sources. This is a classic 7-segment (plus right-hand decimal point) red (655nm) LED display. The digit is 0.3 inches tall. The plastic carrier is 0.4 by 0.8 inches and stands up 0.2 inches from the circuit board. The pins are 0.2 inches long and are pre-tinned. Each segment ABCDEFG has an anode (+) pin. There are two duplicate cathode (-) pins. Lastly there is a right-hand decimal point pin, for a total of 10 pins. The pin grid is standard 0.1 inch spacing and 0.6 by 0.3 inch maximum.
Segments are lettered clockwise starting with "A" at the top. The center segment is "G". The LEDs are a typical 20mA 1.7V see the attached scan for max values.

Use in digital electronics training course. Comes with simple data sheet with pin reference designation. Perfect when used to compare 7447 and 7448 BCD's.

Great product! Though the 10 pins bend easily, they won't break (so far), but be careful they don't short! It worked as soon as I got it and it still works just as well. Overall, I'd still give it 5 stars!
