Comments about RadioShack 0.5-Amp SPST Reed Relay at 12VDC:

I bought 2 of these 12vdc reed relays 20 years ago to connect my car stereo head unit's amp remote out to my electronic crossover and 3 amplifiers' turn-on leads, removing the strain from the head unit's relay. I used them for about 10 years before getting rid of the car but keeping all the equipment.

I recently found the relays packed away and started using them to remotely trigger my computer and NAS unit to power up from an Arduino. I just had to put a flyback diode (1N914) reverse-biased across the coil terminals to protect the uC from spikes when the relay switches off.

I know there is a 5vdc version of this reed relay, but I use the 12vdc version with the Arduino's 5vdc logic output because the 12vdc coil's high resistance of 1050 ohms provides for a nice low current draw of 4.5mA.

It has no problem switching on, ever. And I've never had the relays stick. I think some folks might be over-working theirs to get such results.

Besides measuring the coil resistance after purchasing them (before the Internet access era), I was reminded of that measurement by looking at the picture at the top of the product page.

Found at another site, the coil resistance is 1050 ohms and at 12 volts this would require about
11.4 ma. of current to activate.

Comments about RadioShack 0.5-Amp SPST Reed Relay at 12VDC:

I use this when installing a Bluetooth adapter to new hybrid's radio. The Bluetooth adapter had a control signal, which when a call was active, outputted +12v. My radio had an input that needed to be grounded when a call was active. I simply wired the coil of this reed relay to the Bluetooth adapter, and the contact to the radio (with the other side of the contact to ground). Works great!!!

Great for Rock Band bass pedal modification (for use with real kick pedal). By attaching a magnet uder the bass pedal, and this relay to the base of pedal (underneath but not touching), you simply wire the other end to a 1/8" mono plug and you have a reliable and perfect pedal replacement.
