I bought this after reading an article on how to control computer fan speed. It said a 3 watt 20-50ohm rheostat can handle computer fans up to 10 watts. Ive been using it with a 6watt fan and it doesn't heat up

I use this in-line with a model railroad power pack to fine-tune the train speed.
I've also used it with a portable, battery-powered railroad in-line with the 6-pole rotary switch to give me a wider range of speeds. The rotary switch taps into the battery pack at 3, 4.5, 6, 7.5 and 9 volt positions, with the rheostat giving me varying speeds at each position.
Used by itself with 9-volts, the 25 ohm rheostat only gives a range of very fast to too fast.
I just wish that the shaft and mounting threads were longer, as it is the thickest panel that you can mount it in is 1/4".

Put this into a computer to control two 120mm AeroCool sharks in a push/pull config for cpu cooling. Simply putting them through a splitter and into the cpu fan header didn't work, not enough juice. This thing works great for controlling the fans, as at maximum it doesn't give any additional resistance, and at the lowest setting it still gives enough power to keep the fans from stalling.

Great part works fine, it is hard to find wire wound rheo's around this value (25 ohm) and I think Radio Shack knows this so they have the price jacked up sky high. If you only need to buy one of these for a project the price is not to bad but when you use 20 a week...

It works exactly as I intended in the audio mixer I designed and built. I use it at church all the time. I use it to monitor myself on the piano and still hear the monitor mix.

This rheostat wires as does any typical pot. The middle is the wiper like on pots, and the two ends are the respective ends. It seems to work very well as part of my attenuator circuit (low power section).
