Comments about RadioShack Mobile CB Antenna Ball Mount Base:

For anyone to say this is a pain to install..c'mon now. 10-20 minutes tops. Make life easy on yourself and pull your coax out through the side of your truck, and install it there, then just pull it back in, and bolt it all up. If you want to get picky on a [$] dollar item, then spend a couple dollars and buy ss screws from ace or somewhere. Make sure you get some bare metal in back of the mounting plate, and run good grounds. It is what it is folks, prepare, and its all good.

Comments about RadioShack Mobile CB Antenna Ball Mount Base:

First off, I am an Electronics Engineer, and an Extra Class Amateur Radio Operator, not a simple "hobbiest". I could not believe the number of complaints against this mount, and without exception they were by clueless owners. The plastic disk is an INSULATOR and MUST BE PLASTIC of a specific type (dielectric) or it will affect you ability to properly transmit through it. The mount is CHROMED, Just like Chromed car bumpers, it requires maintenance to stay looking good. One person suggested painting it, I've always waxed mine with a good car wax. They have always lasted the life of the car, well over 200,000 miles and 10 years, and this goes back into the 70's with multiple vehicles at a time. ALSO as with EVERY antenna mount on a vehicle, they require maintenance, they should be taken apart (the cable and the antenna itself) and the connections cleaned once a year, even with a tight connection, corrosion will set in, remember the antenna moves subtantially when the vehicle is in motion, and between the hot sun and the night cold (and worse if you live in the north) the constant expansion and contraction causes moisture to work its way in to the threads on the mount, so they MUST be cleaned at least annually, This is SOP with this type of non sealed radio transmitting antenna.
To address some of the problems others have complained about, yes the mount plate is plastic, thats because it is an electrical insulator DO NOT replace with metal. Install ONLY on a perfectly FLAT surface. The Nut that holds the ball itself in place must be EXTREMELY tight or the mount will rotate, there is a LOT of leverage on the antenna due to wind at highway speeds. It IS chromed cast metal get over it, stainless costs three times as much but does not offer any better performance, it actually offers resistance to the RF due to the higher inherent lump resistance of the metal itself, so WAX the mount regularly. There is a hole in the end of the stud where the center conductor of the coax is connected, via a machine screw and SMALL crimp on ring connector. You do not use a BIG ring connector over the stud. the same setup is done on the coax shield to the metal backing ring for the antenna ground. DO NOT SOLDER CONNECTORS ON THE COAX TO ATTACH IT TO THE MOUNT!!! Soldered wire becomes brittle and WILL crack and break. This is why premade cables are crimped not soldered. Remember that antenna will move in the wind, and that will translate to vibrations on those ring connectors, soldering them will cause them to fail.

These are the biggest do/donts of this mount, follow them and it will outlast the vehicle you put it on, and you may even be able to transfer it to another like I have done in the past. And as with every job, preperation is the key, do it right and it works, take short cuts and skip maintenance and it WILL fail.

The ball mount is good for what it is, it manily needs tweeking a bit.
Take the grey plastic mount off the ball and replace it with a home made mount of 1/2" plexxy or lexan. These are easy to make and they don't break as easily. I broke the grey mounts but never broke one that I made. I also use inter tube for the insulation liner, you can pick up at any tire shop.

Simple logic, Failing to prepare is prepairing to fail. In other words, research the product and plan your installation. Once planned well it will install easy and work properly for years. The product installed easily with the help of my 5 yr and 8 yr old sons. i used coax for a Firestik K8 with the lug terminals already on. [$] at local truck stop. painted to seal all screws bolts and connections under bumber where it is installed.

Comments about RadioShack Mobile CB Antenna Ball Mount Base:

Don't get ahead of yourself on this product. Even though Radio Shack created threads for you to screw the coax on to the mount, you won't be able to without an adapter. I found this out a couple of days after I had went back to the Shack and asked the clueless employees of what I should do. Luckily, there was a man that knew how to solve my problem and told me about stripping the coax and crimping the wires to the receivers and then screwing them into the mount. After all that, installation was a breeze! I mounted this into my toolbox and put the spring and 102' on it and had to TIGHTEN this more than I think I needed. If you buy this mount and have an extremely long antenna put into this mount, make sure that you tighten the bolt that holds the mount together.

Let's start here I am a retired communications specialist for the USAF with over 23 years of service. I am avid into both CB and ham radio and have used this mount many times with great results in all applications. I noticed other reviews complaining about corrosion and pitting of this mount..Hmm can we say spray paint? I put a bolt into the antenna mount hole and paint the whole thing after positioning it in advance. then remove bolt and install on car. As for the spring rusting? I don't use one and I thought this was a review of a ball mount? I cut the stud off and replace it with a 12" long and 1/2" diameter piece of SS that is threaded and drilled for whip to insert into with set screws. By the way a 1/4 wave cb antenna is 108" NOT 109" I find it amazing how many people will write a bad review because they don't have the knowledge to install this or are to proud to ask for help. I will agree a stainless ball is a better product but with a little care this will last and let's be serious here it's [$]!

I have a very good understanding of communications and fabrication. I built my own cable and soldered the terminals on to it to connect to the mount. I went so far as to weld the nuts onto the backing plate. This mount could not hold its position with the antenna attached. After fighting with it for a year I finally gave up. Going to either build an adapter for a fixed mount or spend the extra for a stainless quality ball mount.
