Poor Tracking - Same old RS junk

By Rick

from Columbus, OH

About Me Power User

Pros

  • Easy To Set Up
  • Uses Exisiting 3 Wire Cab

Cons

    Best Uses

Comments about RadioShack Outdoor Antenna Rotator:

I bought this rotator to replace a 13 year old RS unit that was tracking so badly I could not ever tell which way it was pointed. Out of the box, synchronized and installed, even the new unit tracks poorly. Point it south - it points southeast. Point it east - it points southeast. Unreliable. Repeated re-synchronization exercises do not yield any better performance. Very disapointing. I though after 13 years RS would have gotten it right. They have not.

      Pros

      • Cheap

      Cons

      • Flimsy
      • Not durable

      Best Uses

      • Tower Roof

Comments about RadioShack Outdoor Antenna Rotator:

      Failed after 5 years
Rubber seal fails and lets water in I suggest building a better seal/water deflector over the seal area ... or whole unit.
Uses loose ball bearings in head which seize up when water penetrates and grease dries up
Difficult to install ... the antenna on the rotator -- but easy to install the rotator on tower
[ Rated flimsy AND cheap because it should have used a sealed bearing for 2 more $ and needs a better seal]

Works well if you follow the directions

Comments about RadioShack Outdoor Antenna Rotator:

This is just a basic rotator with no frills. If you follow the directions it works exactly as described. One review described it as plastic, but the rotator itself is all die-cast metal.

      Rotator case subject to failure

Comments about RadioShack Outdoor Antenna Rotator:

The Rotator and TV antenna was mounted using all Realistic products. Heavy Duty 10' Mast was connected to the Rotor. The Heavy Duty 5' mast connected the TV Antenna 5' pole to the Rotor. The motor pulsed and surged when turning during windy days. The Whole side of the rotor that holds the bottom pole brackets(cast metal)broke off during high winds and ruined the Realistic top of the line TV antenna. This may be great for a small (FM) antenna or light duty use.

Comments about RadioShack Outdoor Antenna Rotator:

Had this unit 4 years with no problems! Dont over tighten things and it will last. People like to torque things super tight which is a problem with plastic! I put a cover over mine to keep the weather off of it the day I put it up and it still works like it did the day I installed it. Yes there are better made rotors but not for the price of this unit. If your only going to be useing a small antenna 5 element or smaller this thing will do the job just try to use your head and remember this isnt a Ham 4, it will not take the wind load od a Lazer 500 or Moon Raker 4. I liked it so well I bought another for my rotatable Dipole. 4 months and still no problems!. Hope this helps. I seen alot of negitive feed back do to misuse. Read and understand the directions and its max use and you wont have some of the problems above or below!

Comments about RadioShack Outdoor Antenna Rotator:

I'm a radio ham. Used one for a 2m 5el yagi, worked great for years. Then put it under a Cushcraft A50-5S 6m 5el yagi @ 20ft. Worked OK for a while but stopped after a few weeks. Thought I burned it out. But motor still hummed. Disassembled rotor completely, not too hard to do if mechanically inclined. Beware of loose ball-bearings on main shaft when removing main gear plate. Took all three gears off. Found first gear off motor shaft was rusted stuck. Cleaned all with WD40. Worked till real free again. Greased up. Reassembled. Works great again now! Only took a couple of hours. YOU CAN DO IT TOO!

I replaced a unit that I had had for years that had stopped working. The old one had survive strong winds - this one broke in less than 120 days.... just beyond warrantee. I don't recommend use with large antenna - of course when it broke it bent up the antenna too!

Comments about RadioShack Outdoor Antenna Rotator:

I moved to a rural area so I optimistically purchased this product while remember the one my parents had that lasted through my childhood until the age of cable tv. Wow how things have changed. What a piece of plastic junk. Did not work one year. No syncing or anything else will fix a broken rotor. 90 day warranty? No wonder why it is so short.

              Can't
              Rotate
              Any
              Period before it breaks

Don't waste your money. Check into Ham/short wave radio equipment rotors instead. Thanks Radio Shack. Know lets see if my brutally honest review will appear...
