Comments about RadioShack 75-Ft. UL-Recognized Hookup Wire (22AWG):

Insulation shrinks too much when soldering. Putting jumpers on circuit boards and want the insulation to butt up to the board. It's shrinking back 1/4 inch or more. Only using a 25W iron. Can reheat and push the wire through to butt the insulation, but have to be quick to avoid more shrinkage and am then concerned about cold solder joints.

Comments about RadioShack 75-Ft. UL-Recognized Hookup Wire (22AWG):

Good value, got it in the store for a fivver. But make sure you know what you are getting. It is clearly labeled as "stranded", but I didn't see that, I was just looking for the gauge. It is not a single 22-gauge wire, but small wires stranded together to make a 22-gauge total width. So it's worthless for the logic design projects I needed it for in the university lab. But no worries I'm sure we will find a use for it.

No shortwave antenna that did not come with a radio? I got a project for you to share. Just buy the set of wire here and simply get a mono connector, solder it to the wire, keep the spool for proper storage and string out the wire at a specified length to improve your shortwave radio reception. You can even use this wire to make loop antennas. Still, it should with more wire up to 90 feet on 3 spools.

Just a cautionary note. Do not use this type of wire in "vacuum tube" circuits! The wire you use must have insulation with a rating of at least 600 volts. Pre-amplifiers, voltage amplifiers, and other low level audio circuits that do not involve power amplifiers do not draw a lot of current, so 22 - 26 gauge (AWG) wire rated at 600 volts will work fine. Some of the new Teflon insulated wire available works well but is more costly than standard wire.

I've been buying this at RadioShack since the 70's. Great value, but insulation melts terribly with soldering iron heat. Always struggled with that. 20 Watt iron with *fast* use and immediate blowing is recommended.
