    Old-style part with metal shielding

    By akh

    from NYC

    Verified Reviewer

Comments about RadioShack 38kHz Infrared (IR) Receiver Module:

The old version of this part (with the metal shielding) appears to be the JRC (a.k.a. NJR) NJL74H380A which unfortunately has been discontinued. Going by the datasheet for the TSOP4838 (no metal shield, mentioned by jba below) the two parts seem to have roughly the same specs _except_ that the newer part seems to include additional filters that improve performance in normal use but make it unusable with a continuous signal. Though the datasheet implies otherwise, the old metal-shielded version _is_ usable with a continuous 38kHz signal (outputs continuous low). In other words, if you're using this for a remote control the new part should work fine (actually, probably a lot better than the old one) but if you're doing something weird and need support for continuous signals then the new part probably won't work.

Old part number: New Japan Radio NJL74H380A
    Markings:
Back of case (under tabs): LG in a circle
Front of case (behind shielding, below lens): 18 42

Here's the datasheet for the old version:

Comments about RadioShack 38kHz Infrared (IR) Receiver Module:

It would really be helpful if there was a link to a data sheet or something. It isn't good business to sell blindly. I frequently buy from RS, but probably not much longer. Documentation would solve the problem. Spending money on parts without documentation is a gamble, especially when working on repair or expensive robotics projects. Me or my business will no longer be purchasing until this is fixed.

BUSTED! The Shack switched parts on us!

The original metal frame part was wonderful, and was continuous signal acceptable. Good luck finding it. Now they shoved an all-black (no metal frame) unit in the same package, same part number. Reduced range, different characteristics, and NOT continuous signal acceptable.

            SHAME ON YOU, SHACK!

Comments about RadioShack 38kHz Infrared (IR) Receiver Module:

Wasn't sure, but didn't want to order the "correct" part and wait 2 weeks for it to arrive, so bought this one, soldered it in, and it worked perfectly.

So if you have just about any Toshiba TV, this will probably work if your ir sensor goes out.

Comments about RadioShack 38kHz Infrared (IR) Receiver Module:

I have an iMON VFD IR receiver & VFD display device. The IR receiver itself broke off and the wires were only left. I took the chance to visit this site and purchase a replacement IR receiver. Once I got it, I took off the aluminum casing from the IR receiver and soldered it onto the receiver board. The new IR receiver is shorter than the original but to its advantage, it works better than the original. The final result is that I can continue to use the VFD display and saved myself from spending another $100. Thanks Radio Shack!!!

Used this receiver in an introductory microprocessor project: adding only two resistors and one capacitor I was able to discern the full range of codes from a standard Sony remote controller. Subsequently incorporated into an old TV to add a remote mute function it operates reliably at 30 feet in full daylight.

This receiver is for 38KHz. It is compliant with Sharp and others. RCA/Philips is 36KHz. The receiver can be removed from metal frame for more versitility.
