Comments about RadioShack 315-Ft. Magnet Wire Set:

I picked up this set about two months ago to practice some of the concepts from my telecommunications class. First the size of the wires are well chosen 30, 26, 22 gauge which allows for three current levels. I started with the 22 gauge winding aircore inductors, then I used the 26 gauge for toroid core inductors, I have plans to used the 30 and 22 gauge wire also in antennas.

I have not found any flows in the wires. I am thankfull that I was able to pickup this set at my local store without having to wait for delivery.

I want to note that the inductors wound with these wires matched the inductance values very close to the mathematical equations, that tells me that the wires are made to industrial specs.

    Enjoy!

On the side note I picked today some wrapping wire and boards to use for a prototype, but I couldn't find a wire wrap tool... It felt like going to the coffee shop to buy a coffe but there is no cream...

From what I understand wire wrapping was big back in the day and as higher frequency devices hit the market, it took less relevance. But wire wrapping is a valid prototyping alternative, no soldering and still very reliable. Everything is not digital. I hope Radio Shack management brings back a little bit of analog to the menu, more in line with electonic engineering schools, because the Radio Frequency domain will never go away. It doesn't hurt to sniff around a community college and four year college engineering departements or trade schools and say, what's up, how can we help each other?....

Keep an eye on the colors

    By Jeff

    from San Diego, CA

Comments about RadioShack 315-Ft. Magnet Wire Set:

I didn't have the tangles others have reported--the wire on the spools I bought was properly wrapped.

It can be hard to see the size of the wire while the plastic's still wrapped around the spool. I don't know if the color coding is standard, but on the set I bought the red wire was the 30 gauge, and the green was the 26 gauge.

It would be helpful to have the color coding information marked on the packaging. It would be even more helpful if we could purchase the various sizes separately (hint, hint).

Comments about RadioShack 315-Ft. Magnet Wire Set:

We have evaluated the review from RS Man of Northern CA. We verified via a bin check at our distribution center that the lengths advertised in the product description are the lengths that ship.

Note: A rating is required to submit a review. RadioShack chose the 3-star middle rating, because we felt we should remain neutral. This rating does *not* indicate our assessment of the product's value and reliability.

Comments about RadioShack 315-Ft. Magnet Wire Set:

I really like this wire. I have found it easy to use when making inductor coils for crystal sets and ham radio projects. I really don't know what some of the complaints are about. Yes, the wire can be brittle, especial the 30 gauge red wire, but it is not too difficult to work with if you take your time and don't let the spool unravel or get kinked. I do wish the wire was available in single spools and longer sizes instead of in a set of three. It is sad that Radio Shack no longer carries a lot of the electronic parts like they did in the 70's and 80's that they were known for, and what established the company. That said, there are sources on the Internet for wire and parts, you just have to do a Google search sometimes to find them.

Comments about RadioShack 315-Ft. Magnet Wire Set:

Magnet Wire is increasingly becoming a vanishing resource; which is quickly disappearing from almost all of the outlets where hobby coil winders used to be able to find it for winding their own custom coils. (at least Radio Shack still carries an extremely limited "Token Assortment" of Magnet Wire. Too bad they have almost eliminated all of their other parts for the electronics hobbyist; an available parts "stock and trade" that this company was originally built on. The most obvious reason that Magnet Wire is fast becoming a scarce resource, is that the "Big Industries" don't want home hobbyists to be able to wind their own custom coils for themselves anymore. Perhaps that is the same reason why Radio Shack is now "Folding back" and kinking their Magnet Wire on its spools, to render it completely useless for winding a decent coil for Critical custom hand-wound coil applications. As for references to finding the correct -Ten to Twenty foot lengths of 14 or 16 Gauge Magnet Wire for a Tesla Coil's Secondary at Radio Shack? Good Luck buddy! Let alone the necessary 1000 or more Feet of 26 to 30 Gauge Magnet Wire for a Tesla Coil's Primary.

I bought this because I was planning on making a basic AM radio that called for magnet wire, This wire was kinked all through out the spool making it near impossible to use if you need more than a couple of feet, I have spent the last 2 hours trying to unkink it to the point of it being usable and I only have about half of what i need, seriously poor quality, I am extremely frustrated at the moment which is the only reason I am even reviewing this item

Strip the ends of this wire by melting off the enamel using a lighter. This works very well. You'll make yourself crazy trying to use wire strippers.

I successfully made an antenna coil by wrapping the desired # of turns, taping them together, melting both ends of the conductor with a lighter, touching the stripped ends with a little flux, then soldering one end to tip and other end to shield of a coaxial cable. Worked well.
