Good Radio, Alert Out Has Problems

Comments about RadioShack® SAME Weather Radio W/ AM/FM Radio and Dual Alarm:

I found this weather radio to be the easiest to use of the many I have owned.

However, I cannot figure out how to connect an external alerting device to this radio. Previous RadioShack weather radios produced a 7-volt signal at the external alarm jack/terminals. This allowed you to us a X-10 device to control external alarms. This weather radio has 7 volts at the Alert Out jack when there is NO alert being transmitted. The manual also gives the following instructions on how to use the Alert Out:

Connect to a compatible external alerting device (can be up to 200 mA with a 3.5 mm plug (not included).

These instructions can be interpreted two ways. The weather radio can provide 200 mA to drive an external alarm, or it can allow 200 mA to be passed through the radio with the external alarm providing the power. I cannot get either way to work.

Depends on what you want it for

Comments about RadioShack® SAME Weather Radio W/ AM/FM Radio and Dual Alarm:

If you are really into the Alert System function, and are getting it for this purpose, it works well. So well in fact, that it will likely make you and anybody else in the room jump off your seats when it goes off without warning and ear-blasting loudness.
As a portable and general use radio, it is not a good choice in my opinion. The backlight has four brightness levels, but even at the lowest setting it will illuminate your room at night. No way to switch it off. Even in battery mode the backlight is always on, therefore it will run the batteries down even when you don't use it to listen to the radio. This is a major oversight of the engineers creating this device.
Regulating the sound level is cumbersome due to the touch screen interface. You need at least a few touches to lower or increase the audio level.
I returned mine for a stereo radio without the weather alert feature.

Comments about RadioShack® SAME Weather Radio W/ AM/FM Radio and Dual Alarm:

This radio is the first radio I've owned to receive good FM stations in the northeast mountains of WV. It was frustrating to not have home reception of the stations I listened to in my car.
This morning the weather radio alarm went off for the first time - very loud, but it got the message across!
I just gave another one as a gift.

Comments about RadioShack® SAME Weather Radio W/ AM/FM Radio and Dual Alarm:

I got this to replace my clock radio that died. as an alarm clock, I am not impressed. the alarm clock alarm is a bit "wimpy" and you do not have the option to have the radio to come on as an alarm. where this Radio SHINES is as a weather alert system. the radio is dual powered which is nice, but during a weather emergency, it sets of a VERY LOUD sirein alarm and then plays the weather information AS LOUD AS IT CAN. after the alert has played, it turns off but a red light flashes to let you know there is a weather emergency. I am quite impressed and please with this function, which is the ONLY reason that I am giving this radio 4 stars. if it would give an option to play the radio as an alarm, and if the supplied alarm was as loud as the weather alarm I would give this 5 stars. if you live in a High weather risk area, THIS is the radio you want to have to let you know that bad things are coming. I just wish the alarm clock functionality was as good as the alert function.

I got this radio for christmas 2013, and I liked it the second I turned it on. It has unbelievable reception, and it has great sound quality. My only complaint is that the backlight DOES NOT TURN OFF. I mainly use it as a weather radio. The touch screen works very good. Thank you RadioShack!!!!!

Comments about RadioShack® SAME Weather Radio W/ AM/FM Radio and Dual Alarm:

...as the touch screen interface adds an extra measure of complexity to its use, with some features "hidden" from view.

The display's backlight level CAN be adjusted - to a least FIVE different levels of brightness! "From the main screen, you can adjust the backlight brightness by pressing and holding any where on the screen" until the desired level of brightness is reached (this is CLEARLY stated at the top of PAGE 10 of the User's Guide).

To those who write negative reviews: before slamming a product as being "inferior" or "defective", FIRST READ about ALL of the features and UNDERSTAND how they ALL operate... that's what the User's Guide is for!

Many of us make rely on these "real-world" reviews when making purchasing decisions... so to others submitting comments: please THINK BEFORE YOU WRITE.

As a recent purchaser myself, I do personally have two LEGITIMATE gripes about this product's display:

                        - In AM or FM radio mode, the "buttons" are too small and too close together on the display - unless you have child-sized fingers, it is way too easy to tap on and select an adjacent mode or function that you DON'T want - this can be quite frustrating.

                        - No display lock - when transporting in a travel bag, the touch display is too easily activated causing the radio to power on, thereby draining the batteries (the backlight should also have an "off" mode when operating on battery power, but doesn't - a feature offered on many competing models). A display lock would also be useful in households with small children, as many would consider ANY touch screen device simply too difficult to resist.

For these reasons, I can not give this otherwise commendable and likable product a perfect rating (sorry for being a spoil-sport to all of those five-star reviewers out there).

P.S. I also own (for three years now) the popular but, sadly, discontinued Cat. No. 12-519, and often use it as a point of comparison (also not perfect, but still regarded as one of the most desirable examples of this product type).
