Comments about RadioShack® 46-Range Digital Multimeter w/ PC Interface:

Horrible meter. It's my second one now and it died as well. Turned it one and it beeps, insert the unconnected leads and poof, the display goes blank. Battery voltage is excellent. Just died. I've purchased cheap meters before and this wasn't the cheapest by far, but it's the worst for reliability I've ever seen.

Comments about RadioShack® 46-Range Digital Multimeter w/ PC Interface:

The "optional temperature module" mentioned in the meter's user manual (in order to use a K type thermocouple to measure temperature with the meter) does not appear to be available from Radio Shack, and a simple adapter that does not boost the voltage of the thermocouple is not useful for this purpose.

GOOD NEWS: The Fluke 80TK thermocouple module is compatible with this meter, amplifying the voltage of a K type thermocouple and allowing it to be used to measure temperature. Price for the module may be an issue, but if purchased pre-owned, can be obtained for less than the cost of the meter.

Regarding the use of the meter with a PC:
The Meterview software is very basic, but works just as well on the 64 bit version of Windows 7 as it did on Windows 95. You can save raw data as well as print a graph.

You may not need a USB to RS232 adapter to connect your meter to a PC that does not have an external RS232 port. Check your motherboard: If you have a group of pins labeled "COM," all you may need is a "serial 9Pin RS232 motherboard com port ribbon cable connector bracket." Inexpensive, no drivers needed.

Comments about RadioShack® 46-Range Digital Multimeter w/ PC Interface:

I've used this meter primarily in voltage, current, and resistance modes for testing, monitoring, and troubleshooting. Computer interface and software works with Windows XP (haven't tried Windows 7). Data can be exported to ASCII file for spreadsheet analysis. Easy to use. I have compared this meter's measurements with two others that I own and obtained agreement to within specified accuracy on several ranges. I own two and they have both been very reliable over 2-3 years of use.

Comments about RadioShack® 46-Range Digital Multimeter w/ PC Interface:

I purchased this meter at the beginning of 2004 and it's performed wonderfully over the past 9.5 years. I use it primarily in a ham radio environment to perform various testing functions and to troubleshoot mostly RF gear to the component level as well as general home use. It's not my Fluke 87 but for the price paid it does it's job and then some and I find I use this meter far more than I do my Fluke.

Unfortunately there's no software support for Linux users, and the Windows-based software is somewhat limited, however, it does suffice for my purposes. The logging function is quite useful and does indicate the time but NOT the date! Although it's not a big deal, I wish the display had back-lighting. The display is very easy to read and all info is easily interpreted. Meter comes with a short serial cable and PC interface is a snap. Aside from having limited software with no Linux ability I found it to be sufficient for my particular purposes. I have searched high & low on the internet for after-market software for this meter but have never found any :(

The build quality is very good and my meter has held up extremely well over the past decade. The supplied probes are of good quality and had held up very well. The meter comes with a thick yellow outer rubber cover that does increase it's bulk but is essential in preserving your meter's health so please USE IT :)

That said, I would still recommend this meter if you need a general multimeter that performs most typical measurements in a household or ham radio environment. All in all I really love this meter and if you find it on sale it's an even better deal. I'm very happy I made this purchase nearly a decade ago and would certainly buy it again if the need should arise :)

This is a great multimeter. The team at RS has done a great job. The PC inteface, uses an RS232 port to inteface with a computer. It includes a Meter View application which can be used to chart, in real time, the progress of the value you are measuring. For example the discharge rate of a battery in DC volts over 1 hr.

Comments about RadioShack® 46-Range Digital Multimeter w/ PC Interface:

Meter was purchased for voltage recording. It is an acceptable DMM but not a great value given the limited data recording ability. The data interface is undocumented and only works on Windows PCs. Open-source packages that reportedly worked on LINUX with earlier RS-232 models do not work with the 2200039. USB data stream is binary and proprietary. The meterview software is quite limited in functionality. Data records do not include a date in their timestamp.

Comments about RadioShack® 46-Range Digital Multimeter w/ PC Interface:

I own this multimeter, among others. One or more persons in this forum has asked in this or similar reviews how one obtains the available thermocouple (temperature probe) accessory for this or related RadioShack multimeters. I ordered my EXTECH brand K-type thermocouple possibly directly from Radio Shack (this was four years ago.) If they don't stock it it is very much available from either EXTECH directly or any of their distributors: Mouser, Allied, Newark, etc. and is typically priced from twenty to fifty dollars. The EXTECH banana plugs are spaced such that they plug directly into the RadioShack meter. Other brands are available as well. They are perfectly acceptable. Wayne Reses
