No AC adapter: at this price point, not including an external power source for this product is unforgivable, especially when it needs to be left "on" for long periods of time to function as intended. Many competitors' models even include a charging stand, at an overall lower cost! (deduct one star)

      Flaws that may affect performance....

Comments about RadioShack® 7-Channel Handheld Weather Radio with SAME:

I would imagine that many like myself purchased this portable model for outdoor or recreational use, and to a major extent it fulfills that purpose. It feels solid and can hold a signal quite well. Its display is easy to see day or night and the built-in alarm clock is a nice touch. Programmable alert types allow for personal customization and adaptability of use (and are a feature not found on many portable WX radios).

However, a product that starts off with "five star" appearances quickly looses points and appeal once performance and design flaws begin to reveal themselves when called into use. I'll list the cons I encountered, and leave it to you to decide if they're "dealbreakers" like they were for me...

      - Volume levels: loud may be a plus if you're outdoors, but indoors it can be irritating. At its lowest volume level, it is too loud for moderately quiet places, inside or out. There is not enough discernable difference in volume gradient, particularly low through mid-range. Prepare to annoy others around you, especially in settings where there is little or no background/ambient noise. (deduct one star)

      - No earphone/audio out jack: this could have helped solve the above problem. It would also allow for playback via external devices with an audio input, where volume could be better regulated, including a car stereo for mobile use. (deduct 1/2 star)

      - No accommodation for entering marine, Canadian or alternative location codes into memory: OK, not everyone who purchases this radio is going to use it on a boat to receive marine forecasts and alerts, but some of us may want to - and we purchase a product like this because its portable, rugged, weather-resistant design seems ideal for that purpose. However, this SAME-capable radio will not accept FIPS codes for marine locations, despite the fact that the option exists to manually enter FIPS codes directly by keying them in digitally (versus selecting from a pre-loaded name list of U.S. counties and territories - which can also be entered as FIPS codes if desired). Apparently, if a code does not match up with a location on the list, it is rejected and not stored. So...why bother offering manual entry as an option? Same thing applies for Canadian location codes (CLC) - for those of you travelling "north of the border" (Weatheradio Canada and NOAA Weather Radio share identical "weather band" channels and SAME alert/coding technology). This programming inflexibility also affects upgradeablilty, as it restricts users from entering future new or revised location codes. (deduct one star)

      - Primitive display: in addition to scrolling text, many competitors' models include supplementary multi-color LED alert indicator lights to attract attention (better for hearing-impaired users). Also, the clock time does not display when alert text scrolls or the radio plays. (deduct 1/2 star)

      - No AC adapter: at this price point, not including an external power source for a product with battery-recharging capability is unforgivable, especially when it needs to be left "on" for long periods of time to function as intended. Many competitors' models even include a charging stand, at an overall lower cost! (deduct one star)

Comments about RadioShack® 7-Channel Handheld Weather Radio with SAME:

I think it works well. I can carry it around and always have the weather. Reception is generally good but it doesn't blow me away. Midland Wr 120 and Wr 100 get better reception. Speaker is too loud and doesn't have an earphone jack. Battery life is a little bit short but it lasts a good while and it takes double A's so they're easy to find. Overall, nice radio.

Comments about RadioShack® 7-Channel Handheld Weather Radio with SAME:

I bought this to replace an older model from Radio Shack that had given me several years of service. I liked my previous model, and when I got this new one home I was happy to see that it operated the same way and had all the good features my last one did. This new model even got rid of the annoying beep whenever a button is pressed! But, here's the problem (and the reason my last one died too)... when you buy this radio, it doesn't come with a power cord. Radio Shack will gladly sell you the correct wall power adapter and cord, which is fine... except for the fact that the end of the cord fits real loose and sloppy in the radio. So loose that just the slightest tension on the cord (think shaking the radio around) will cause the plug to fall out of the jack on the radio's side. If you have batteries in the radio it will continue to operate, and gives NO warning that external power has been removed. Not good because then your batteries die without you knowing. I would have thought Radio Shack would have taken care of this by now... my last radio failed because after plugging/unplugging so many times, the power cord became so loose that it wouldn't even stay powered up anymore.

Comments about RadioShack® 7-Channel Handheld Weather Radio with SAME:

An outstanding weather radio. I would rate it with 4 1/2 stars.

Note this is only a weather radio without AM/FM/Shortwave broadcasts.

I will buy one for other family members. I did not give this a five star rating for only one reason -- relatively short battery life "when set to receive alerts."

This radio can be manually set to provide the user with alerts (audible warning tone, followed by broadcast reports). Based you your requirements/location, you may customize the radio to provide over 50 different types of warnings, e.g., Tornado Watch, High Wind Warning, Wild Fire Watch, Severe Weather Statement, Hurricane Watch, Avalanche Warning, etc. You can turn off the National Weather Service broadcast like any other radio, but leave the power on so alerts can be received/sounded. It is here where the battery power is limited. You can use alkaline or rechargeable NIMH AA's. I have used 2700 mAH (large capacity) NIMH's, but these fully charged batteries will only last 48 hours with the power on. This radio has the option of using an AC power cord to keep the batteries charged, but I cannot find the power cord offered here on the Radio Shack sight!!??

Otherwise, the radio is invaluable during power outages. It served me particularly well during Hurricane Sandy informing me of the latest changes with the weather. When my laptop, iPhone, etc. lose their power, this weather radio is invaluable. (Just need to supplement it with an AM/FM transistor radio and have an extra supply of AA batteries.)

The radio can be programmed with FIPS codes (Federal Information Processing Standards), i.e., codes that identify your state and county location. Thereafter, the radio provides weather reports applicable only to your specific geographic location via the SAME system (Specific Area Message Encoding).

I like the bright red color; facilitates locating it quickly when it's not on. It has a smooth feel to it similar to rubberized cell phone cases. Solid construction; well made!

I read one of the other reviews that stated the volume is very loud. It can be turned down to reasonable volume, but you cannot turn it down to a very low volume if you may be trying not to bother someone else, e.g. when sleeping.

I have had mine for two years and can say it prepped me for atleast three big storms. We vacation in Northern Idaho where weather and reception can be problematic. I had excellent reception and I can credit this radio for lead time to button down our travel trailer(awning)many times not to mention severe thunderstorms in my area. Totally suggest this radio for RV'ers!
