Comments about RadioShack Digital Sound Level Meter:

The first one I purchased had a defective screen right out of the box and I exchanged it for another. The second unit just failed after only 5 months of occasional use and the associates in my local store could not figure out how to go about utilizing the 1 year warrantee that it comes with for a return or repair. I guess that I will need to go to a higher end product for my sound level meter needs.

Comments about RadioShack Digital Sound Level Meter:

I seem to have a big discrepency between this meter and another... This one reads 94db other reads 115db. Which is right? Other is a three hundred dollar meter.

Comments about RadioShack Digital Sound Level Meter:

I have a Radio Shack Digital Sound Level Meter #33-2055 and planned to upgrade to this model due to its auto-ranging and min. 30dB (vs. manual ranging in 20dB increments and min. 55dB). However, this model does not have integrated averaging, whereas, the 33-2055 allows the user to take average readings for any period from 1 to 200 seconds. This is very useful for measuring sound levels for noise ordinance requirements.

Comments about RadioShack Digital Sound Level Meter:

It does fine electronically. But it shuts off by itself after about 15 minutes. No way to disable the "auto-off" function -- and the instruction book makes NO mention of this. The meter has to be turned on again. The "auto-off" is consistant, so I don't think this is a defect. This does have one advantage: The power button can be easily touched while the meter is put away in it's soft case and thus turn the meter on by accident. But the "auto-off" limits the problem. Also, the battery cover falls off easily -- the plastic latch is not very secure. A piece of tape solves that issue.

Comments about RadioShack Digital Sound Level Meter:

I have used an old Radio Shack model 33-2050 analog Sound Level Meter for over 25 years in setting up listening areas and studios, and it has served well except for its limited sensitivity (not accurate below about 55 dB) and manual range settings. This new 3300099 digital meter solves both of these issues with measurements down to 30 dB, and auto-ranging over the full 30-130 dB. In addition, the new meter has a rubberized case that is well isolated from the mic so that handheld measurements do not pick up handling noise like the old analog meter.

On the other hand, the old analog meter can measure quite accurately up to 20 kHz (even though it was not spec'd to do so!) and the new meter falls off starting at about 10 kHz, and is not useful for measurement above 12 kHz. This is not a serious problem for noise level measurements, but may be a consideration if you wish to measure frequency response of speakers/rooms above 10 kHz. This is the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars.

Overall, a well designed and useful product.
