    Comments about Make: Electronics:

I purchased this book after seeing at a local radio shack. Although I troubleshoot electrical systems at times with my job, I never had to understand much about how individual components work to make functional circuits. This book renewed my electrical/electronic interest and refreshed my theory learned long ago, but much forgotten due to lack of use. The Author does an excellent job of explaining electronics in a simple, yet interesting way that stimulates learning. I did not find any inaccuracies in any of the projects. Easy to understand color photographs and diagrams explain both theory and how to assemble the circuits. The book begins with very simple projects and explanations and builds upon this foundation to some rather complicated circuits in chapters 3 and 4. I succeeded in completing nearly every project in the book over several months, including adding some of my own enhancements. Chapter 5 is an introduction to other areas of electronics such as audio circuits, radio, microcontrollers, and robotics. Although the projects in chapter 5 aren't really necessary to do, they provide a "jumping off" point into other specific areas of electronics.
I have since purchased many other books on various electronic topics/projects, and none of them have been as accurate or easy to understand as this one. I would like to see more from this author. Although the pages of my book are tattered, marked on, torn, and all show signs of much use, I still find myself referring back to this book whenever my theory fails me or I need to review a concept. As for the parts required, radio shack component packs 1 and 2 contain everything you need to get through chapters 1-4. I will post a separate review for the component packs which unlike this book, were not error free... I have also posted some photos of some of the projects from this book that I completed and installed in enclosures. It is not necessary to "box" any of the projects though, I just enjoy it, and in a couple cases actually had a practical use for them. Photo captions: 1st photo shows L-R; AM radio transmitter p.267, burglar alarm project 15, reaction timer project 18, keypad lock project 20,an AM radio (not included in book but theory is covered: also a crystal radio center and a small mono audio amplifier). The other photo shows my completed game show button controller based on the circuit from project 21 boxed in a console and with a lot of additional features I added.
