Comments about magicJack PLUS™ VoIP Phone Adapter:

Thought about this forever! Tired of paying .05 cents per long distance call for our office. For unlimited calls thru our carrier, it was another $21 + weird taxes a month totaling abt $30. Radio shack explained how it worked somewhat & they had a good refund policy if I wasn't happy. When I encountered problems, I e-mail tech support at Magicjack; replies within 2 hrs. or less; wonderful & very helpful. Do not like that I have to dial a 1 +area code for even local calls (thus a 4 rating); but it is an upside to paying all those other carrier's fees for L.D. I am 70y/o female, had to re-read the enclosed set-up materials a few times...and connect & reconnect to get our scanners, faxes, and computer, plus ans. machine to work properly..but I did it! Yay! Suggest not connecting to USB port on computer as it didn't work nearly as well as with ethernet connection. Even shows the number of in-coming call on our fax machine. Surprised at that. We have Cox cable (Nv.) and with our wireless router it worked right away for calling out (once I got it connected right). Other downside is no calls INCOMING UNTIL YOUR NUMBER IS TRANSFERRED off prior carrier (mine took a week). Once transferred I learned it's $9.99 a yr. to keep your just ported number (from old carrier). So I recommend you get a completely new number to avoid such on-going fees. Unless you have loads of business cards out there...like we do! Plus additional fees exist once you are logged in to register..u know they always want more money! So we pre-paid another $70 (or abt that) to get registered, port number, and keep going for 5yrs.) Now just $9.99 annual fee left to deal with. All in all, it will save a lot of money over time! Worth the purchase...esp. with great customer service at store & on-line w/Magicjack.

Inconsistent Phone Service; Great Sound

By mmctec

from Central Connecticut

About Me Consumer, Practical, Tech Savvy

Pros

  • Cables Provided
  • Clear Reception
  • Easy Controls
  • Easy set up

Cons

  • Limit On No Of Phones
  • Phone Service Drops

Best Uses

  • Dorm Room
  • Home Phone Service
  • Long Talks
  • Travel Phone Service

Comments about magicJack PLUS™ VoIP Phone Adapter:

Purchased Magic Jack Plus for economical solution to high home phone bills from Connecticut cable company. While it will take 4 months to "pay off" cost of equipment (on sale) and buying an additional 5 years of service, $2.50 for monthly phone service for 6 years (includes porting old number) with no toll/long distance charges is unheard of!

Very easy to hook up. Call quality is very good, with rare feedback or echo on calls.

Cons: MJack Ethernet cable is not the best and the connector is nearly impossible to remove from MJack unit. Since the first day of installation, had frequent, sometimes daily line drops, resulting in no phone service; thank God all calls go to voice mail when service is out. Every time this happens, there is no dial tone and the caller ID on my Dect cordless home phone system reads "check phone line." The only way to get messages at that point is to check email until you reset unit by disconnecting and reconnecting it to power.

Customer Service is Overwhelmed and Not Proficient with Solutions to Problems: Spent hours in a chat with Magic Jack customer service to no avail. My chats are constantly transferred to their top 10% best customer service reps, but they never solve the problem either. They delete and reload files, but only removing/plugging in unit works to reset phone service and customer service doesn't have a clue. So, I called them again when the line dropped the next time. They asked if I was using a wired phone and I said "No," but told agent their ads show woman talking on a cordless phone. "So what's the problem? I cannot have phone cords that are longer than 6 feet, so are you implying I should have wires all over the floor?" They never had a response. FYI: Customer service reps work on more than one call at a time (why?); this is why reps keep asking you the same question over and over and reps reply sometimes with info for another chat. Oops. Not the best way to effectively service your customer base.

Unsure whether I will return MJack to local Radio Shack for refund. Why not? Well, if calls go to voice mail even when line drops, it's not the end of the world. And, to restart, you just unplug and plug the MJack gizmo back in to your electrical outlet. For cheap phone service, should I expect more? I would recommend this to friends with reservations, noting technical issues. Radio Shack should add another Bottom Line rating category to customer product reviews: "Recommend with reservations," "Maybe" or "Might."

Comments about magicJack PLUS™ VoIP Phone Adapter:

This product saves us tons of money and has crystal clear sound. Easy to install, just plug it into your router and hookup your phone line. I have had Magic jack for years and only had to reboot it once. There is only one small issue with this system, you cannot dial people that have conference lines for free. You have to put money on account to dial these numbers. That's the only reason I rated it 4 stars instead of 5. Had one office I could not call because of this issue and I just picked up my cell phone to make that call. I love how I can take the product with us when on vacation or business. People that don't like generally are less tech savvy individuals or have less than reliable internet or routers.

Comments about magicJack PLUS™ VoIP Phone Adapter:

I just purchased a brand new magicjack plus to replace my old normal magicjack. I transfered my old MJ number to the new equipment and everything worked fine for 3 hours. After that it just told me to register again the MJ. I tried to do it but it jest asking again and again to register it. I contacted tech support (CHAT) every day for a week. Every time I received the same answer... "your account is under review, you will receive an email soon"

Well it has been a week and 7 to 8 chats about it, no email has been received and still no service in my MJ.

            DON'T BUY THIS

Comments about magicJack PLUS™ VoIP Phone Adapter:

I initailly had problems on MJ plus but read a blog about needing a Doxcis 3.0 cable modem and a non Linksys router

Upgraded the modem first no luck. Then updated from a linksys wireless router to a netgear wireless router and has been perfect since.

I read on a FAQ blog to avoid Linksys router and have an updated modem

Incurred additional equipment cost but works as advertised.

                Very pleased with MJ Plus

I always wanted to save money on home phone since I don't use much. Cell phones have taken over. After talking with a friend who has used magic jack-plus for a long time I was convinced. I'm happy I got it. Those of negative reviews please check your internet speed before you complain. It's a good buy. Good on international calls and above it all money saver.
